This podcast 3X'd their revenue in 12 months w/one change



Last year, the 4-year-old parenting podcast "What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood" transitioned from baked-in/embedded ad reads (an advertising message that is part of the podcast content and lives within the episode for its lifetime) to dynamically inserted ones. 

As the name implies, dynamically inserted ads can be switched out on-demand, and they enable podcasters to sell advertising against their full episode catalog. 

The change resulted in a 3X revenue increase compared with 2019.

Noteworthy insights:

  • Before they made the switch, the podcast co-hosts realized that about 45% of monthly downloads were from episodes that were more than 30 days old — unlike with a news show, listeners were often tuning in to the archive. 
  • One reason why dynamic ads were a fit was due to the sizeable episode archive; the podcast had around 200 episodes when they moved away from embedded ads.
  • To make the switch to dynamically inserted ads, they had to change to a hosting provider that could accommodate this. They chose Megaphone, which also increased their hosting costs (from around $10 to $99 per month).
  • Dynamically-inserted ads do not have to mean non-host read/endorsed.
