The Main Thing

Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: February 28, 2020
Top Tracks: Paper Cup, Brother
Similar Artists: Kurt Vile, Bleachers, Animal Collective

I love the phrase "Your favorite DJ's favorite DJ" or "Your favorite band's favorite band". I'm not sure if anyone has ever describe Real Estate this way, but I like to think they have. The latest release from Real Estate, 'The Main Thing', is probably your favorite band's favorite album. The album seamlessly winds its way from track to track. It's smooth and melodic and is perfect for walking over the river and through the woods to grandma's house, if that's the type of thing that you're into. It's as soft rock as soft rock gets. It's as indie as indie gets. And we love it.

O' Be Joyful

Shovels & Rope

Genre: Folk
Release Date: January 1, 2012
Top Tracks: Birmingham, Lay Low, O' Be Joyful
Similar Artists: The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medacine Show, Houndmouth

Sitting in a 90s model passenger van banging on pots and pans and a beat up old 6-string is about as folk as folk gets… and Shovels and Rope pull it off with style. The southern duo lets their stripped down sound ring out loud and true on their 2012 album. We dare you to try and not sing along to Lay Low or Birmingham after the third listen.

See You Later Simulator

Ghostland Observatory

Genre: Electronic
Release Date: September 7, 2018
Top Tracks: Life of the Party, Sometimes
Similar Artists: Pretty Lights, LCD Soundsystem

Take a journey to "synth-city" as Ghostland Observatory returns after an 8-year hiatus, delivering a diverse project that is equal parts dreamy and spooky. Highlighted with piercing lyrics, the focus here is definitely still on the wide range of electronic elements that take the listener on a mythical journey of sound. Mostly down tempo, this album is a perfect backdrop for a chill night with some sparkling lights ... just don't get caught off guard when the bass comes around!

Deja Vu

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Genre: Rock
Release Date: March 11, 1970
Top Tracks: Almost Cut My Hair, 4 + 20, Our House
Similar Artists: The Band, Neil Young, Allman Brothers Band

For this throwback Thursday we're taking it back to the 1970's when long hair, body odor, and rebellion were all the rage. The power-quad of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young were known as much for their provocative folk ballads on the current state of affairs in America as they were for their powerful rock anthems. Déjà Vu was their second studio album and the album that produced many of the hits the group was able to tour off of for the next 10 years. It's a must-listen in the history of folk-rock in America.

From The Fires

Greta Van Fleet

Genre: Rock
Release Date: November 10, 2017
Top Tracks: Black Smoke Rising, Talk On The Street, Safari Song
Similar Artists: Led Zeppelin, Gary Clark Jr.

This album is brought to you by our friend, Nic. Nic is a fellow music lover, guitarist, and happens to run his own newsletter too. For those of you out there that are working on side projects, new ventures, or just love creating new things - subscribe to The Slice for curated articles, resources, and software tools that help you become a better founder and maker.

Now for Nic's album description:

As a hobby, I’ve been playing guitar for the last 9 years, and over the years I’ve adopted an appreciation for a lot different genres, but I also loved that classic rock sound, and these guys (Greta van Fleet) are a group of 20 years olds that managed to revive that classic rock sound in a modern era. Their sound and lyrics are just dope, and all of their songs are just a blast to play on guitar! Officially a fan boy now.
