NichePursuits.com - the backscratch method

The other day I was doing some brainstorming on how I could grow my software business (Link Whisper).

What I realized is that I just needed to lean in a bit more on a strategy that was already working.

That strategy?

The backscratch method.

Let me explain how it works for a product business, like Link Whisper...but then I'll explain how you can use it for building links for SEO.

"Scratch my back and I'll scratch yours"

Sure, that's what the porcupine said to the cactus, but its more than just a punchline.

I personally like to re-arrange it a bit and offer the help FIRST.

I'll scratch your back, then will you scratch mine?

For Link Whisper it might work something like this. I've written an article on Niche Pursuits and I give a nice mention to another blogger or product owner.

I might even give them some coverage in my email newsletter. This sends them traffic and of course gets them a nice link!

After the fact, I reach out and say, "Hey, I just mentioned you on my blog and looks like I've already sold some of your product as a result."

(I've scratched their back already, so what comes next is easy).

I simply say something like, "Looks like your audience might be a good fit for Link Whisper, any chance I can offer your audience a 10% discount on my tool?"

So, I do 2 things: first give them the mention/traffic, 2nd offer something special for their audience if possible (a discount).

This starts the conversation and can often lead to some nice promotions on their blog or newsletter.

As you can imagine, this strategy can work really well for link building as well.

Give someone a link, let them know, then start a conversation (I wouldn't usually ask for a link right away).

For Niche Pursuits, I might offer to have someone on my podcast (scratch their back)...then it's a no brainer for me to go on their podcast.

They give me a nice mention on their blog, get a link of course, and sometimes I'm in their newsletter...and of course on the podcast.

But there are lots of ways you can use the backscratch method for links:

  • Hey you have a broken link, here's a better page.
  • Hey, here's a free infographic I want to develop for you.
  • Hey, I just featured you on my facebook group.
  • Hey, would you like to do a guest post?

This strategy is tried and true for all types of businesses and has been practiced for centuries.

Local businesses, online businesses, big and small.

When people are willing to offer value first, it's so much easier to start that conversation that leads to a satisfying...backscratch.

Start Your Niche Site with a Bunch of Links

Trust me, I know how hard it can be to start a site from "scratch" (word of the day!).

The backscratch method works for building links, as I mentioned.

But you can also start a site on a domain that already has authority and links to make things a bit easier.

As a reminder, I shared a story on Monday of how Azedine DJedid bought a premium aged domain from ODYS Global and the site when from nothing to 13,000 visitors a day in just 8 months.

You can read the entire story of how he bought an aged domain and grew that site here.

ODYS Global is a marketplace where you can buy pre-vetted domains that have links and authority already.

The team of ODYS Global is focused on providing domains that already have strong SEO value.

Is every domain going to shoot your site to the moon? Of course not.

But I did some digging into their available domains and there are definitely a lot of good ones there.

Its free to join and you can look at the domains before you buy.

So, you can do any additional analysis to make sure you are getting the premium domain you want.

Oh, and ODYS is offering Niche Pursuits readers a $100 welcome bonus when you join right here.

This $100 credit will basically act as $100 off your first domain purchase.

Check out ODYS Global here.

Overall, I hope some of what I've shared today has sparked an idea or two for you and helps you grow your business.

Thanks again for reading,

Spencer
