15 Expert Ideas For Easy Home Organization, From Your Closet To Your Pantry

Home organization is having a moment. Shows like Get Organized with The Home Edit and Tidying Up with Marie Kondo are consistently popular on Netflix and, with people being home more in general, there’s never been a better time to get organized. But getting there takes time, effort, and a little bit of money. If you’re a newbie, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin.

However, all the experts I spoke to agree on one recipe for success: start small. “You want a small, contained space you can see from beginning to end,” says Joanna Teplin, co-founder of The Home Edit. “Start with a drawer,” advises her partner Clea Shearer. “Starting small with a contained space allows you to get your feet wet and to be excited to continue in slightly larger spaces,” Shearer explains.

Prioritizing which spaces really need organization is important, too, says Ashley Murphy, co-founder of the Neat Method. “We often see people try to tackle multiple spaces at once, then get quickly overwhelmed and end up with little to nothing accomplished,” she explains. Murphy suggests starting with the space that most impacts your daily living, whether that’s your pantry, your closet, or your bathroom sink. Ready to dive in? The organizational essentials below will help you get things in order, no matter what area of the house you’re working on.

Free-floating stuff isn’t great for organization. “Think about containment and think about keeping everything corralled,” Shearer says. Wire baskets can be a good way to separate food into categories—salty snacks, sweet treats, pasta and grains, etc.—and keep them contained, Hagmeyer says. This set of two durable steel baskets comes in chic colors like teal, powder blue, light pink, or cream. They’re small enough to fit on most pantry shelves, but deep enough to contain plenty of stuff. (For a more affordable option, turn to Amazon.)

Pantry shelves can become a free-for-all with food boxes. Putting your dry goods into specific clear containers will allow you to see what you have on-hand, Murphy says. OXO’s 20-piece set of airtight canisters is an investment, but comes with enough containers to fill your whole pantry.

“Your bedroom should be as minimal as possible,” Shearer says. “It should be a calm, serene place.” If you tend to use your phone in bed or like to have it within reach while you sleep, she recommends a docking station. The chic wireless charging tray shown above comes in a number of colors and finished, and is compatible with a wide variety of smartphones.

According to Shearer, having a spot for your jewelry to go is important for both storage and to have a place for you to put your stuff at the end of the day. If you change up your jewelry often, an organizational jewelry box may be helpful. But if you tend to re-wear the same earrings, watch, or ring, Shearer suggests having “a tray or little jewelry dish sound so things aren’t just creating clutter.” We like this set of three nesting trays ($42) by Open Spaces—available in three color tones—which you can use together or separately.

“Hangers are the most helpful thing in a closet,” Shearer says. She and Teplin are especially partial to velvet hangers, which have a slim profile that lets you fit more stuff into your closet. “A slim velvet hanger can hold so much more,” she says. “They give you a lot of bang for your buck—it’s a universal thing we do in closets, big or small.” The Container Store’s velvet hangers are slender but sturdy, while the velvet-like finish provides a secure surface preventing straps or sleeves from slipping off.

Space-saving, along with maximizing storage options, is crucial in a closet, Shearer says. If there is wall space available, she recommends using hooks to store bags. “It becomes a bespoke situation, depending on the closet,” she says. This solid wood hook rack features 10 well-spaced pegs for bags, hats, and just about everything else that needs hanging. Meanwhile individual wall hooks, like this $40 set of five from Wayfair, offer more custom placement.

A bathroom drawer is a “great thing to tackle, and an easy space to get your feet wet,” Shearer says. She recommends starting off by tossing the things you don’t need, like product samples. Then, put things in their place with the help of drawer organizers. “It goes from a drawer being a graveyard to a thing of beauty,” Shearer says.

Bathroom space is valuable and, if you have vanity drawers, “you don’t want things you use once in a blue moon in that space,” Teplin says. “That’s valuable real estate,” she adds. Instead, you can store things you don’t use as often, like extra toothbrushes, under your sink in an organizer. This organizer features five different compartments with plenty of room for items of varying sizes.

“In the home office, you just want to be strategic about what you’re keeping there,” Teplin says. She recommends having a spot where you can put papers, bills, and letters you need to tackle or are “pending,” as well as thing that need to be done right away. This metal and wood letter organizer has three different sections for papers and files, and an extra storage drawer at the bottom.
