Cuomo Admin Under Federal Investigation For Handling Of Nursing Home Deaths

TOPLINE

The FBI and federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York are investigating New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of Covid-related nursing home deaths, multiple news outlets confirmed Wednesday, in what is quickly becoming a major scandal for the governor.

KEY FACTS

The investigation, which was first reported Wednesday by the Albany Times Union and later confirmed by the New York Times, is still in its early stages, but subpoenas have been issued, according to ABC News.

An aide admitted last week that the Cuomo administration temporarily withheld some data about nursing home deaths from state legislators out of fear it would be used against them by Justice Department under former president Donald Trump.

New York Attorney General Letitia James last month alleged the state underreported coronavirus-related nursing home deaths by as much as 50%, mostly because the original data didn’t include residents who were transferred to hospitals.

Cuomo’s office did not immediately respond to Forbes’ requests for comment. Both the FBI and the EDNY declined to comment.
