#69 - The Week of March 22-26

Have you all heard the rumor (or maybe it's true, but it definitely sounds like one of those things that's an internet rumor) that the most skipped day of work is the Monday after the Superbowl? We'd like to amend that internet rumor and say that it's actually the Monday following the Sunday that pairs the NCAA March Madness Tournament selections and the Grammy's.

We hope that your favorite college basketball team got a chance at the big dance! If that didn't happen, then we hope that your favorite artist managed to walk home with some hardware last night. And if neither of those two things happened, then check out our Twitter Feed. We were going to town last night on some Grammy #hottakes and memes and we hope that we can at least offer you a laugh.

Genre: Pop
Release Date: July 1, 2016
Top Tracks: Tokyo Drift, Uninvited
Similar Artists: Vera Blue, Chelsea Cutler, Halsey

Mallrat is just a vibe. She’s got that low-key electro bedroom-pop sound with an extra dose of mood. Her vocals are vulnerable yet approachable, coming across like she’s sitting on the couch next to you just chatting. Best listened to on a lazy weekend morning or rainy Tuesday afternoon, perhaps with a lover or close friend nearby.

Bonus Content: Mallrat is for sure an artist to keep your eye on in coming years. She’s already blowing up the Aussie charts and has been opening on the recent tours of Maggie Rogers and Post Malone. Read more about her rise in this article where MTV labeled her “The People’s Pop Princess."

Mirror Master

Young the Giant

Genre:  Indie-Alternative
Release Date: October 12, 2018
Top Tracks: Superposition, Call me Back, You + I
Similar Artists:  Grouplove, Of Monsters and Men

Young the Giant has toed the line between indie and electronic pretty perfectly their entire career. Rock-anthem vocals mixed with futuristic synthesizers make sure Mirror Master is packed with hit after hit. You've probably heard 'Superposition' at your local ballpark or 'Call me Back' over the loudspeakers at the local watering hole. We can't wait for the next Young the Giant album as we know it's going to be packed with even more hits.

Bonus Content: According to an interview with Billboard, the album title and the underlying theme throughout the album is deeply personal and stems from the idea that ""You look at yourself in the mirror every day and you see a different version of yourself"", according to Sameer Gadhia, the band's front man.

Carnavas

Silversun Pickups

Genre: Rock
Release Date: July 25, 2006
Top Tracks: Lazy Eye, Melatonin, Three Seed
Similar Artists: Modest Mouse, Smashing Pumpkins

Carnavas was the breakthrough album for the post-punk alternative rock band The Silversun Pickups. I'm not going to lie to you all… we found this one playing rock band. The hit single off the album "Lazy Eye" was featured on the videogame. The Silversun Pickups have spanned a wide variety of rock's sub-genres in their almost 15 year career. From touring with Snow Patrol to opening for the Foo Fighters to being likened to the Smashing Pumpkins, their albums each have a distinct sound. Carnavas is highlighted by big wide-open rock chords and moody lyrics.

Bonus Content: According to an article by the Australian publication, "The Age", the band's front man Brian Aubert and the bassist Nikki Monninger met in 1994 when the two were flying to Cambridge for an exchange program. "Aubert instantly noticed the shy bassist across the aisle, and his interest was further piqued when he saw her stealing bottles of alcohol on the plane. (She would distract the air hostess, then nick the booze)." Now that's rock and roll, baby.

You've Come A Long Way Baby

Fatboy Slim

Genre: Electronic
Release Date: October 19, 1998
Top Tracks: Praise You, Ganster Trippin', Rockefeller Skank
Similar Artists: Armand van Helden, Groove Armada

Fatboy Slim is an OG. He’s been around since the dawn of the electronic music scene and has been creating epic beats ever since. He first rose to popularity in the 80’s as part of the UK based Indie-Rock band, The Housemartins. He broke off in the early 90’s to his solo career and released his most famous work, 'You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby', in 1998. This album is sample-city, rife with quips and hooks you’ve undoubtedly heard before. Whether it’s Right Here, Right Now pumping up the crowd before a big game, or the 1st lyric of Praise You quieting a concert crowd, Fatboy’s PHAT beats are sure to send shivers down your spine.

Bonus Content: Check out his top-10 moments of all time. He closed out the 2012 Summer Olympics and once held one of the largest free concerts in history with over 250k attendees on Brighton Peer. The stuff of legends.

Sketches of Brunswick East

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Genre: Jazz
Release Date:  August 18th, 2017
Top Tracks: Tezeta, Dusk to Dawn on Lygon Street, any of the Sketches, Rolling Stoned
Similar Artists:  Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, Sunbeam Sound Machine

It's an album that just sounds like one big song and while it sounds better on vinyl, the crossover transitions cannot be ignored.  It's smooth while also a little bit funky, and it reminds me of relaxing in one of my dreamscapes. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizzard is such a fun band in general, and I feel like they cater to a lot of different genres, but this collaboration with Mild High Club is one of their most satisfying pieces.
