Abilene Christian Basketball's win over Texas this weekend --> MADNESS

The first time I heard Rise Against ---> MADNESS

In the spirit of March Madness (and because our bracket is already busted, thanks for nothing Illinois), we've decided to put on our own version of the Big Dance - Album Daily style. This year we are keeping it simple: just reply to this email with your top 4 favorite albums we've sent out since January 1st. Then, follow us on Instagram for the results! We'll start with the Sweet 16 next weekend, and hold votes on our IG story, revealing winners at the end of each night.

A Guide to Love, Loss, and Desperation

The Wombats

Genre: Rock
Release Date: November 5th, 2007
Top Tracks: Let's Dance to Joy Division, Kill the Director, Moving to New York
Similar Artists: Catfish and the Bottlemen, Two Door Cinema Club

This album is pure British rock entertainment. The Wombats dance magically between fast-paced rock and perfectly timed, slow, melodic suspense builds. Right when you think they are about to bring a song to the finish line, the lead vocalist and guitarist Matthew Murphy hits the gas pedal and the drums + bass follow in suit. Murphy’s voice is so unique and that makes even the not-as-good songs still fun to sing along with. This album has 17 songs total and they’re all worth a listen whether you’re gettin’ rowdy at the local pub or doing some spring cleaning at home with the windows open.

Bonus Content: The Wombats were originally formed in the early 2000s while attending the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. What’s fun as well is that this band is actually really fond of New York City as so many people are and their song “Moving To New York” off of this album is still a setlist regular when playing live.

Mura Masa

Genre:  Electronic
Release Date: January 17, 2020
Top Tracks: Firefly, Love$sick
Similar Artists:  Flume, Cashmere Cat

Mura Masa is your classic bedroom DJ Cinderella story. He started off remixing songs in his small-town England apartment and quickly became a SoundCloud phenom. Inspired by albums like Gorrilaz’s Demon Days, Mura Masa experimented with African drums and flutes, producing and mixing alongside popular British music. Skip ahead a few years and he lands a Grammy nom for his inaugural album which includes notable collabs with A$AP Rocky and Charli XCX. Just too easy.

Bonus Content: Check out this interview from FADER magazine where he details his small-town upbringing and the SoundCloud stigma.

Bifurcations

Derijk

Genre: Electronic
Release Date: August 27, 2020
Top Tracks: Flutter, Voicings
Similar Artists: Lane 8, Jon Hopkins

With an album title liked ""Bifurcations"" you know you're probably in for something that's going to test you. On this 2020 album, DeRijk explores the deeper and darker side of house and breakbeat music. The album even has lofi and jazz influences as well. It's really quite diverse as far as electronic albums go. Perfect if you need to put on the headphones and crank through some work or for late night drives through the haunted countryside or apocalyptic cityscape. Definitely make sure you listen to ""Flutter"" on this one!

BONUS CONTENT: Not going to lie, we really couldn't find much on the UK-based producer DeRijk… DeRijk if you're out there, we'd love to update this section with some interesting facts about you and/or this album so hit us up! Until then, here's his Facebook Page

Appeal To Reason

Rise Against

Genre: Rock
Release Date: October 6, 2008
Top Tracks: Savior, Hero Of War, Collapse (Post-Amerika)
Similar Artists: AFI, The Offspring

Listen to Hero Of War without crying. Listen to Savior and try to not play it again. We dare you. If you enjoy choruses to write home about and a powerful, politically charged vocalist then look no further than Appeal To Reason. Rise Against is a punk-rock band out of Chicago that’s been around in the music industry for over 2 decades now and they’re taking on every societal topic they can. This album is such an amazing mixture of the hardcore drums and guitar you’d expect from punk rock and vocals you can find yourself singing way too loud to. Have fun.

Bonus Content: Rise Against has always been pretty politically charged. They’re best known for unapologetically criticizing the military, environmental neglect, and many more topics that plague our world. In an interview with singer and rhythm guitarist Tim McIlrath, he’s quoted in saying, “The thing that depresses me most about the state of world, is that it appears we’re moving away from progress. We’re becoming a less evolved civilization, where ideas like racism, sexism and fascism are getting traction again.” In their name and through their music, Rise Against is for “a whole generation saying, ‘that is not the world in which I want to live’.

Red Hearse

Red Hearse

Genre: Pop
Release Date: August 16, 2019
Top Tracks: Red Hearse, You Make It Easy, Honey
Similar Artists: Steel Train, fun.

There's this common saying you might've heard before… ""In this world nothing can be certain except death, taxes and that anything Jack Antonoff touches will be really good music.""

Red Hearse is Jack Antonoff's most recent project that was released without much fanfare in 2019. You'll recognize Jack from his previous groups; fun. and Bleachers. Here he collaborates with Sam Dew and Sounwave to release the group's only piece to date. Red Hearse has the instantly recognizable Jack Antonoff sound: fun-poppy synthesizers, catchy lyrics that sit on top of smartly placed off-beats and enough low-tones to keep your hips moving.

Bonus Content: We've featured Jack Antonoff on Album Daily in the past! Most recently we featured him on 2/4/2021 where he appears with fun. on Aim and Ignite. Did you watch the Grammy's this year? Then you saw Jack accompanying Taylor Swift for the entirety of her performance.
