New Pokemon Snap

Hey, Chris here with issue #230 of Switch Weekly. Here's a look at the week in Nintendo.

New Pokemon Snap is here! Reviews seem generally good. I've not had chance to grab a copy just yet, but it's on my list. Let me know how you like it if you managed to get it (just hit reply).

There's around 25 games coming to the Switch next week, however from my quick assessment there seems to be a notable number of budget / basic releases. So not many highlights to speak of.

Anyway plenty of good reads, so I'll let you dive in.

Cheers,
Chris ✌️

🎮 Currently Playing — Pac Man 99, Godstrike, Knight Squad 2

As Nintendo’s entertainment kingdom expands, it’s still about the games —A good read this. Both Nintendo's Furukawa and Bowser discuss the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Switch in general, and the company's new forays into theme parks, movies, and more.

Harry McCraken // Fast Company

REVIEW New Pokemon Snap is a supremely chill safari on the Nintendo Switch — "New Pokémon Snap is a game that forced me to change the way I think about virtual spaces. Decades of playing games have conditioned me to race through levels, checking off a to-do list of accomplishments as efficiently as possible. But that doesn’t work here. I had to slow down and watch carefully, focusing on the small details as well as the big moments. I had to relax to enjoy the view — and it’s exactly what I needed". This review from Rebecca Stone at Twinfinite is also worth a look.

Animal Crossing fans are reaching a breaking point — Ok, a slightly dramatic headline, but this post digs into how the appeal of New Horizons has worn thin, and how little Nintendo is seemingly doing to remedy that. (My POV: Sure, they are adding updates, but they feel a bit underwhelming. I would have liked to have seen more substance from Nintendo, especially for a game that has done so incredibly well at retail.)

PREVIEW Famicom Detective Club is a pair of visual novels for people new to the genre — "Long-time visual novel fans might find Famicom Detective Club underwhelming, but newcomers to the genre will find them a solid introduction to what all these 'interactive stories' are all about". Here's another preview from Richard Atkinson over at My Nintendo News.

Kris Naudus // Engadget

REVIEW R-Type Final 2 — This is "an authentic if flawed contribution to an iconic shooting game series".

Will Freeman // Nintendo Life

REVIEW Castaway Paradise — This Animal Crossing inspired sim "began life as a Facebook game back in 2014, and it still feels like one seven years later".

Nintendo Themed Crossword Puzzle — In case you missed it last week, I had a go at creating a Nintendo-themed crossword. Around 700 of you have had a go so far, with around 30% of players completing it. I enjoyed it, so will no doubt do another at some point.
