Artificial intelligence has enabled fake images of everything from faces to porn to proliferate. Now you can add fake maps to the list.

In a new paper, researchers from Oregon State University and Binghamton University show how AI can be used to fabricate satellite imagery. Imagine governments using satellite deepfakes to hide nuclear sites and concentration camps, or corporations using them to cover up environmental degradation. Geo-spoofing, as the researchers call it, is more than just a hypothetical threat: People already use it, albeit more frivolously, to cheat in games like Pokémon Go, and it can even be used for good.

AA’s no-fly zone: What you need to know
If you have an American Airlines flight booked between now and mid-July, you’re going to want to check if the flight is still scheduled before heading to the airport.
The U.S. carrier is said to be canceling hundreds of flights over the next three weeks, in part because of labor shortages.
As America comes out of the pandemic, more people are traveling again—and companies large and small are having problems filling job vacancies. This dual hit means American Airlines is both overwhelmed with rising customer numbers and understaffed at the same time.
According to CNN, American Airlines will cancel between 50 and 80 flights each day going forward.
