A Sneak Preview of What to Expect From the Tokyo 2020 Olympics | Non-Obvious Insights #278

Dear Newsletterest,

My email was a bit delayed this week due to some travel, but I have a special edition for you this week to help you get ready for the opening of the Olympics next week on July 23rd. In this issue of the newsletter I'll be taking a deep dive into everything related to the Games. Next week I will be back again with the usual curation of interesting stories on all different topics and industries. For now, let's look at some Olympic stories!

A Sneak Preview of the Opening Ceremonies

If you want to watch the start of the Games LIVE from the U.S., you'll have to get an early start. Thanks to the 13-hour time difference, NBC will be broadcasting the Opening Ceremonies LIVE starting at 6:55am EST on Friday, July 23rd. Or if you're not a fanatic like some of us, you can just wait for the rebroadcast later that evening. Either way, to help you get ready, here's a sneak preview of what to expect from the Opening Ceremonies.

Get An Inside Look At The Olympics Village

Some of the venues are already open and videos are starting to emerge of what they look like. I was only lucky enough to make it inside the Olympic Village once (it's usually off-limits to anyone but athletes). In this article, you can watch some videos and also learn some interesting stats about what athletes and teams are shipping to Tokyo. Apparently the British team has 45,000 tea bags and 8,000 porridge pots on its list.

How NBC Will Be Covering the Games Differently This Year

In a past edition of this newsletter, I shared a story about how the financial windfall for NBC from Olympic Sponsors for broadcasting the Games this will likely eclipse their revenue for Rio 2016 even despite the pandemic. In this article, you can get a sense of how the coverage of these Games might vary from past years. The biggest thing, it seems, is just how deeply we will likely see news coverage merged with sports coverage. The Covid story at the Games will be at least as big as what happens during the actual competitions. .

Are the 2020 Olympics Cursed and Should They Even Be Happening?

This insider's opinion piece offers a perspective from a journalist living outside of Tokyo on why the Japanese people largely are unhappy about the Olympics happening at all. This is just one of several openly critical articles that were published this week looking at everything from local resistance to the Games, to the financial motivations behind why it may be going ahead anyway, despite the fact that only about 16% of the local population is vaccinated. It's hard to argue with the numbers around the finances of Olympics and how much they end up costing host cities. As a lover of the Olympics, I can't agree with the author's call to abolish them. I think the world needs a unifying moment like the Olympics can offer and it always will. Still, there are some cities that benefit more from hosting an Olympics than others. The 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, for example, arguably established its reputation as a global city and jump started decades of progress.

Will the Competition Be Easier This Year With Less Competitors Participating?

Apparently, only 17 swimmers entered in Women’s 200 Butterfly, fewer entrants than in previous Games. In other sports, such as tennis, some of the biggest names are opting out of the Olympics. If you are wondering if Covid-19 affected the field of competitors that will be in Tokyo, the answer seems to be pretty clear.

What To Expect at the Olympic's Newest Sport ... Surfing

This year surfing has been added to the list of Olympic events for the first time and this overview tell you everything you need to know about how the sport will work, be judged, and how you can watch.
