[Crew Review] What 3P sellers can expect from Amazon’s new CEO

Numbers

1 Month Later

It’s been more than a month since Andy Jassy took the reins from Uncle Jeff. He will soon be a household name just like Tim Cook did when he became Apple’s CEO.

Although he doesn’t tolerate incompetence, Jassy is often described as kind and empathetic.

Will he be the same to third-party sellers?

50,000+ Chinese Accounts Banned

Chinese brands make up almost half of all Amazon accounts and the majority of the top sellers. Recently, however, many of them are disappearing from the platform because of review violations.

Over 50,000 Chinese sellers had their accounts banned on Amazon, and now, they’re looking for other channels to sell their products on.

This move is incentivized by China’s tech hub Shenzhen as it offers a 2 million yuan subsidy (around $308,000) to merchants who sell on Amazon and who have been affected by the review fraud crackdown.

To qualify for the subsidy, independent stores must meet the following requirements:

  • Must have started operations before 2019
  • Monthly sales of at least $300,000

It’s easier to not feel as bad about using fake reviews on Amazon when you have this kind of government support waiting for you.

No. 1 - Amazon Surpasses Walmart’s Sales

People are spending more online, so it isn’t that surprising when Amazon finally beat Walmart’s sales during the past 12 months. The Everything Store raked in around $610 billion while the king of brick-and-mortar only had $566 billion in sales.

With more shopping done online, Walmart needed to increase its efforts. They started using their physical stores as fulfillment centers and even opened up their site to non-US vendors. But these moves were not enough to protect its title as the number 1 retailer outside of China.

Walmart once dethroned Sears. It’s not unlikely that Amazon will do the same to Walmart if this trend continues beyond the most recent 12-month period.

1 Proposed Law, Over 150,000 Amazon Products Affected

Amazon sent a really interesting email to some third-party sellers. If you didn’t receive it, here’s the gist: They want to talk to you to get your support against a proposed law that’s endangering their private-label brands.

Amazon claims that they contacted a small number of sellers to make them aware of the dangers of the proposed legislation because it can potentially affect small and medium-sized businesses.

The set of bills will make it harder for Big Tech companies to discriminate against other business owners using their platforms

The emails were more of a preventative move to protect their own products.

How exactly will the proposed law affect third-party sellers?
