Product Habits - Is your company actually secure?

 Hiten's Pick

Over 45% of Employees Take Company Documents

Ever since pivoting Nira into a cybersecurity company focused on document access control, my co-founder Marie and I have been taking a closer look at how employees think about security. We recently surveyed over 300 people, and the findings are fascinating. Most people think security is a priority at their companies, but the data tell a different story. These numbers will make you think twice about how secure your company really is.

 Business

Unnecessary Conflict

Conflict at work isn't always a bad thing. Healthy conflict pushes people to work smarter, communicate more effectively, and build loyalty among teammates. But unhealthy conflict can do quite the opposite, costing time, energy, connection, and trust. Most of the people I know can think of at least one person they've worked with who created conflict unnecessarily. If you're currently working with someone like that, here's what you can do.

The First 90 Days of Building a SaaS Startup

The first 90 days of building a SaaS company are some of the trickiest. If you're at the beginning of your startup journey, this reflection piece on a founder's first three months will be both illuminating and encouraging to you. Especially in the beginning, it's best to keep things simple. My advice? Focus on getting your first 10 users, hone in on the two or three areas of the business you want to move forward with, and do lightweight product prototyping.

Why Are Hyperlinks Blue?

Have you ever wondered why hyperlinks are blue? I didn't—until I read this article. It is a fascinating look at the origins and rationale behind blue hyperlinks, which date back to 1993. This serves as a good reminder to question the small assumptions we make about "best practices" and make more conscious decisions about the products we build.

The History of Google Messaging Apps

Google has gotten many things right over the years, but one of them isn't messaging. The first instant messaging platform, Google Talk, was launched in 2005. Still, even after 16 years of effort, the tech giant doesn't have a stable product in the space. This is an eye-opening breakdown of everything Google has tried over the years—and why each one hasn't worked so far.

 Marketing & Sales

Unlocking Your Conversion Marketing Funnel

No matter how good your marketing efforts are, they won't work if you don't have a solid conversion strategy. The challenge is that every website visitor is different, so marketing funnels are not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. These are helpful and realistic examples of a multi-touch conversion marketing funnel in action. Before you spend another dollar on marketing, make sure you read this.

How To Build and Optimize CTA Buttons That Convert

Take these words to heart: "If you spend 15 hours creating your landing page and three minutes on your call-to-action button, you're making a huge mistake." CTA buttons are one of the most important features on a landing page. The nitty-gritty design of them matters more than you think. These three factors have the potential to change your conversion rates drastically.

23 Habit-Making Insights for Product-Minded Founders

Behind every great product is a deep understanding of human psychology. It goes beyond what easily trackable metrics can tell you. I enjoyed reading this list of frameworks from some of the best product minds. It covers topics like the emotional payoff of products, looking beyond KPIs, creating habit hooks, and productizing status. Check it out here

WhatsApp: The Anti-Marketing Growth Phenomenon

WhatsApp has been around since 2009, and the company's early growth was astounding. By 2014, the company was acquired by Facebook for $19B. How did the company grow so quickly—and with such minimal effort placed on marketing? This teardown provides some insight.

 Management
How To Retain Employees Without Focusing on Money

We're in the middle of the "Great Resignation," where many seem to be quitting their jobs after cultural upheaval and a taste of remote work freedom last year. If you're an employer, this isn't great news. Startups often don't have the means to use money as an employee retention lever. Luckily, people are motivated by more than just money. If you want to build (and keep) a satisfied team, make sure you give them these three things.

Rethinking the Systems and Tools That Run Your Company

Once a company achieves some level of product-market fit, leaders spend less time on the product and more time on people. Whether it's developing leaders, crafting culture, hiring top talent, or keeping employees motivated, CEOs are responsible for nurturing the company's internal systems. I've seen countless leaders make some or all of these five mistakes and go on to regret them later. Read on to learn how you can circumvent each one.

 Insight of the Week
Entrepreneurship Is Dead

This piece articulates a belief I've long held: There is no formula for unprecedented success. No course, book, article, or conference will tell you exactly how to build a successful startup. You're on your own journey. While it's worth learning from those who have had both success and failure before you, ultimately, the only thing you can do is roll your sleeves up and get to work. Try a bunch of things until something sticks. There is no substitute for action
