With many return-to-office dates getting pushed back to 2022 because of the Delta variant (or as Delta Airlines calls it, B.1.617.2), we’re once again feeling a little isolated in our makeshift cubicles. But what if it doesn’t have to be this way? 

The Lily published a heartwarming story about two best friends in their late twenties, Rachel Carlsen and Lily Andrules, who decided to work remotely together for two months. Carlsen moved her WFH setup into Andrules’s place, and would show up on weekday mornings just before 9. They’d meet in between meetings for tea. 

“Across the country, friends are devising another way forward,” writes author Caroline Kitchener: “Now that they’re vaccinated, they are meeting up in each other’s houses, coffee shops, and coworking spaces. They are watching each other nail the important meeting and weather that stressful conversation with their boss. They are learning the names of their friends’ favorite (and least favorite) coworkers.” 

Before you run your ergonomic chair over to your cousin’s house, Kitchener suggests a few best practices to make sure this new relationship goes smoothly. These include setting up a “coworking contract” to cover any unexpected issues that pop up.
