Love Center

ASL

Album Cover 2
Genre: Pop
Release Date: February 14, 2020
Top Tracks: Helium, Elevate, Bite the Pillow
Similar Artists: Red Hearse, Wrabel, Goth Babe

Much pop. Much fun. The harmonizing on ASL’s Love Center between female and male lead singers is what you’ll come to love with this one. Almost like a modern day Black Eyed Peas, ASL settles for nothing short of remarkable for their beats as they dance between hip-hop verses and empty-room lyrics. Love Center, to no surprise, is pretty sexual in nature too. So take that as you will.

ASL actually formed…..on accident? Turns out ASL, a group of 6, all came together in California for a song writing session and that very meeting just ended up turning into their first meeting as a band. According to Billboard, all the members of ASL are a “group of hit-making songwriters” and members have written for artists such as Maroon 5 and One Direction.

They Might've Even Loved Me

NoMBe

Cover 2
Genre:  Funk
Release Date: March 23, 2018
Top Tracks: Freak Like Me, Wait, Can't Catch Me
Similar Artists:  Lenny Kravitz, Big Wild, Foreign Air

"NoMBe intermingles hip-hop, rock, funk, house, and pop into a simultaneously ponderous and powerful sound of his own” reads the start of how NoMBe’s Spotify profile describes him. They Might’ve Even Loved Me is most definitely the epitome of how NoMBe is marketed. An amalgamation of funky bass lines and pop rock is mellowed out by NoMBe’s silky smooth style. ‘Freak Like Me’ and ‘Wait’ are must listens here and make room for them on your top playlist. Save this album in your back pocket as your next recommendation.

This album has a very interesting influence. According to NPR, “NoMBe says the album is dedicated to all the women in his life that have impacted him. “It’s stories across the board — from my mom, to ex’s, to flings, girlfriends, high school crushes.’” NoMBe identifies as a feminist, tours with an all female band, and was raised by his mother and grandmother. Oh yeah, his mother is Chaka Khan too. You can’t just help but love this guy.

Inside Voices

K. Flay

Cover 3
Genre: Rock
Release Date: June 11, 2021
Top Tracks: Four Letter Words, Dating My Dad, My Name Isn't Katherine
Similar Artists: Foreign Air, Linkin Park, The Foo Fighters

Strap on those military boots, let your hair down, and get to stomping for this one. This latest EP by K. Flay is a punk rock anthem through and through. Y’all remember Travis Barker? Yeah, the tattooed guy who did a bunch of covers of rap songs on YouTube. Oh, and he also happened to be a Blink182 drummer? Anyways, in just a 5 song EP, K. Flay managed to get him and Tom Morello each on separate tracks. Punk Rock idols right there. With tracks titled “Four Letter Words” and “Dating my Dad” there’s no beating around the bush with this one, Kristine Flay is here to break stuff and she wants you to join in the game with her. Make sure when you’re listening to this one that your mom is in the other room, kids!

K.Flay attended Stanford University and majored in psychology and sociology. Then switched it up and started making rock albums. Talk about a career change. Here's a fun bio by an Atlanta publication about the artist.

Low Season

Poolside

Cover 4
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: February 7, 2020
Top Tracks: Can't Stop Your Lovin', Kinda Lovely, I Feel High
Similar Artists: Parcels, Moon Boots, Franc Moody

I hate to do this but I’m really not sure how I can’t… this is an album best enjoyed…Poolside. This album is if elevator music was cool. If elevator music was in an elevator that was an all glass sphere that went side to side instead of up and down and was covered in glitter and filled with mimosa. It’s smooth and easy to listen to but still unique enough to be entertaining. So to me that means it’s perfect for when you just wanna hang out by the pool and forget what you’ve been listening to for the last 30 minutes but all you can remember is that it made you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside… or maybe that’s just the mimosa.

According to his own site… Poolside is the recording project of producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jeffrey Paradise. Poolside began in a converted Los Angeles backyard pool house in early 2011 when Paradise set out on a low-stakes journey to produce appropriately chill music for summer soirees, a light but danceable kind of music with sunny vibes and liquid rhythm that he dubbed "Daytime Disco"

Seems like we're not the only ones that think it's perfect for the pool.

House of Sugar

Alex G

Cover 5
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: September 13, 2019
Top Tracks: Gretel, Hope, Southern Sky
Similar Artists: Modest Mouse, Pavement, Starry Cat

House of Sugar is the third official album from Alex Giannnascoli, which is an absolute mouthful of a last name, so let's just go with Alex G from here on out. Like his other projects, his indie-folk-rock sound is on full display: consistent chord progressions from guitar and violin, hazy vocals that range from feeling pleasant to downright ominous, and a variety of instrumental features that drift in and out of each song. Ultimately House of Sugar comes across as both unassuming and undeniably well made.

So what is a House of Sugar anyway? Well, turns out it's a reference to both Hansel & Gretal and the SugarHouse Casino in Philly where Alex G is from. To learn more, read up on this article from Flaunt breaking down the entire album!
