Happy Friday everyone!

I know, I know. I promised to send “10JS” on Thursdays but oh well. This week’s was extremely busy, so I’m really happy the weekend is here.

BTW, today is the day when TSConf2021 happens, which I’m really excited about. I’ll prepare some general overview for the next issue, so don’t miss out.

Parse, don’t validate, incoming data in TypeScript.

For anyone using TypeScript, the problem solved in this article is pretty annoying. Imagine you have a an object that you want to verify according to a schema.

There are libs out there like yup. But libraries like this won’t give you a TypeScript type, so you’ll need to maintain it yourself separately and make sure your schema always corresponds to the type. This is not ideal to say the least.

Read this article to learn how to solve this, and get familiar with some better validation libraries that support TypeScript.

Keep the React app responsive even during large screen updates with startTransition API introduced in React 18

React 18 comes with a new startTransition API that allows you to mark some state updates as non-urgent, which leads to a more responsive UI.

What’s even more fascinating is the the glossary discussion page where core React team members explain the concepts like Suspense, async, batching, SSR etc. in a very nice and simple way. Absolutely must read for every React developer.

htmlq: Like jq, but for HTML.

An interesting tool that could be very helpful in your toolbelt. Basically you can format and query html output by using CSS selectors. So yes, it’s a lot like jq.

In other news...

Steins;Gate

My brother, who is much more into Anime than me, recommended Steins;Gate (8.8 IMDB) and so far it delivers on its promise of a casual and non-conventional time travel fiction.

The summary is “several friends find a way of sending SMSes into the past by using a microwave”. I know, I know.

But the story is really well though-through and explores different aspects of time-traveling and our decision-making. The rules are far from scientific but are consistent and non-contradictory. The characters are likeable and mostly reasonable. If you’re into time-travel, give it a try.

Also, have you seen the latest Matrix trailer? What do you think? In my opinion, even though it looks cool, it really looks like it’s going to tell us a variation on the same story, which makes me sad. 20 years ago The Matrix was a revelation. This time it’s just entertainment.
