NichePursuits.com - Would you spend this much on a domain?

Domain names. How important are they...really?

Sometimes they are not that important.

Other times, they can be critically important...and valuable!

Well, I just bought a domain yesterday for the most money I've ever spent on a domain.

$4,500!

To some people that's way too much. To some people, that's nothing. I know of several domains that have sold for over 7 figures.

I bought this domain for a new project that I'm working on. I love the name and that's the only reason I bought the domain.

This is NOT a domain with links and SEO value.

I'm making a pure branding play. I think the domain will be memorable and will make my new project sound "legit" from day one.

Now, the project is in stealth mode right now, so I can't reveal what it is I'm working on. BUT this is a project that I'll be happy to tell you about in a few months.

Overall, a new domain for a niche site should probably just be hand registered for $10 a year. (This is what I've always done).

Want a content site built on an aged domain with SEO value? Well, there's nothing wrong with that and you can spend anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000+ for a domain purely based on the SEO value.

The name itself might not be that great, but it has links!

Then there is the name value of a domain. One that is brandable and professional sounding. The value of that domain is based purely on what someone might be willing to pay for it, which is often millions of dollars.

Here's a list of some of the most expensive domain name sales ever:

  • Cars.com - $872 million
  • Insurance.com — $35.6 million
  • VacationRentals.com — $35 million
  • PrivateJet.com — $30.18 million
  • Voice.com — $30 million
  • Hotels.com — $11 million
  • Shoes.com — $9 million
  • Fb.com — $8.5 million
  • We.com — $8 million
  • Business.com — $7.5 million

That list makes me feel better about "only" spending $4,500 on a domain!
