Nintendo's 4K problem, OLED and Dread imminent
11 devs, 4k res, 1 rebuttal. Web version | Unsubscribe Hey, here's issue #251 of Switch Weekly. Hope you're doing well. First up, thanks to all the well wishes following last week's milestone of sorts - hitting 250 issues sent. For as long as you keep reading and letting me know this newsletter is of use, I'll strive to keep sending it. Here's to the next 250! 🙂 A really good week for the Switch coming up. Not only is the OLED Switch landing, there's also around 30 games on the way, including Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania (my copy arrived early - so I've been playing it this weekend), that Nickelodeon fighter, and of course Metroid Dread. Full list is below. Hit reply and let me know if anything takes your interest. The big story this week is Bloomberg's report on 4K Switch dev kits. More on that, and a ton of reviews for you to look over, in the issue below. 🎮 Currently Playing — Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, Cruis'n Blast, SkateBird Developers are making games for a Nintendo 4K console that doesn’t exist — Another interesting report from Bloomberg, detailing that nearly half a dozen developers are said to possess dev kits for a supposed 4K Switch. It's rather unfortunate timing for Nintendo — their new OLED model (which has no 4K support) arrives on store shelves in just a matter of days. No doubt due to the timing on all this, Nintendo were surprisingly quick to refute this articles claim, tweeting an emphatic denial, saying it has "no plans" for any new Switch beyond the imminent OLED variant. Of course, Mochizuki has a decent track record, and it's a given that Nintendo is always working on what's next, so this PR response is largely just damage control for the looming OLED launch. Kinda wild for Ninty to basically call a bunch of devs liars though. 🤭 Takashi Mochizuki and Olga Kharif // Bloomberg PREVIEW Metroid Dread – A fantastic fusion of Metroid new and old — Out next week: "Samus has never felt better to control, and the Metroid formula has been honed over time like a pearl, leaving us a shining example of both the Metroidvania genre and this franchise’s capabilities". Nathan Ellingsworth // Pocket Tactics The Switch OLED is a strong contender for most gorgeous handheld ever K. Naudus // Engadget OLED will not save the Switch — The intro to this article reads: "When I first got my hands on a Nintendo Switch, almost half a decade ago".... and now I feel old. Tom Caswell // Input Nintendo's approach to subscriptions is worth watching Christopher Dring // gamesindustry Nintendo Switch Online shouldn't charge extra for N64 and Genesis games Kyle Gratton // Screen Rant REVIEW Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania — Out on Tuesday: "a solid celebration for the 20th anniversary.". Elliot Gatica // Attack of the Fanboy REVIEW FIFA 22: Legacy Edition — Don't buy this: "the latest example of little to no respect being paid towards a fanbase being asked to pay a premium price for a virtually unchanged product. It’s just not good enough.". Simon Cardy // IGN REVIEW Hot Wheels Unleashed — "probably the best Hot Wheels game to date". Chris Scullion // Nintendo Life REVIEW Bonfire Peaks — "easily one my favourite practical puzzle games of all time". A.J Maciejewski // Video Chums REVIEW Centipede Recharged — "so classic that it’s almost always enjoyable on any system, and the same is true here". Trevor Gould // Pure Nintendo REVIEW UnMetal — Think stealthy MGS parody: "It doesn't play brilliantly and we didn't really find it funny at all, but it is consistently presenting new and entertaining ideas to complement the core simplistic stealth gameplay, with plentiful genre changes and a metric ton of references, callbacks and metahumour that will definitely appeal to plenty of people". Stuart Gipp // Nintendo Life REVIEW Eastward is a tender, fulfilling family roadtrip —Yep, I've shared Eastward reviews in issues prior, but I enjoyed this one enough to share it now: "authentically lives up to the three years of hype leading up to its release [...] From the moment you pick it up, Eastward feels like a modern classic". Fūnk-é Joseph // Fanbyte Alicia Haddick // Rock Paper Shotgun
