On February 16, 2021, Texas reached a 72-year record low temperature of -2° F. Pipes froze, food and water supplies were disrupted and widespread power outages left millions with no heat or internet connection.

Twitter’s #ExtremeWeather project explores the role of the platform when responding to natural disasters and extreme weather events. To better understand how the 2021 Texas winter storm unfolded, we worked with Twitter’s team to analyze Tweets sent before, during and after the crisis reached its peak.
