Legal battles and ‘kompromat’ claims haunt Web Summit as conference opens

Web Summit 2021, one of the largest tech conferences in the world, opens on Monday. But this year, a series of multimillion-pound court battles will hang over it.

Founder Paddy Cosgrave is suing one of his fellow cofounders, David Kelly, over a VC fund he said was set up in “secret” to profit from Web Summit’s success.

In turn, Cosgrave has been accused in legal letters seen by Sifted of claiming to hold “kompromat” over Kelly and displaying “a pattern of bullying behaviour”.

So what went wrong?

Secretive fintech VC Hedosophia launches European scout network

Sifted can reveal that following in Sequoia’s footsteps, the London-based firm has enlisted around 20 elite C-suite operators and angels, including Qonto founder Alexandre Prot, to invest in young startups.

Hedosophia’s scouts will write cheques between £20k and £30k, indicating that it wants to invest much earlier than its typical growth stage investments.

Isabel Woodford finds out who the scouts are.

Inside an insect farm

Scalable insect farms could become reality in the next few years as regulation for insects to be used as pig and poultry feed in the EU — and potentially the UK — relaxes.

That's good news for Entocycle, a British insect farming startup. Sifted stepped inside the insectary to chat to founder Keiran Whitaker and explore the buzzing future of insect farming.

Here's what we learned.

\Opinion

We celebrate unicorns, so why is money still taboo at startups?

Founders don't talk about money enough, and that's not a good thing, argues Sanctus founder James Routledge.

This can have implications on founders' and employees' mental health, diversity and inclusion at startups and more.

Here's why it's time to kick the money taboo.

🐅 A behemoth fund. Tiger Global’s fifteenth fund has closed — at a whopping $8.8bn — with a focus on internet technology companies. It’s been powering through European investments this year.

💸 Cheaper decentralised apps. Moralis, a Stockholm-based blockchain development platform helping developers build and scale decentralised apps, has raised $13.4m in a seed round led by EQT Ventures. Over 30,000 developers have used the tool since it launched last year.
