Hi Friend-

I'm emailing from a fresh email address today: ideas@jkglei.com. So if you don't mind, it would be great if you added this email address to your contacts and/or approved senders list so we'll get to see each other again! : D

In other news, I recently sat down with writer Oliver Burkeman for his second appearance on Hurry Slowly, following on the publication of his fantastic new book Four Thousand Weeks.

We chat about why we try so hard to control time, how perfectionism holds us back, and the problems with a “when-i-finally” mindset.

Listen to: "Oliver Burkeman: What if I never change?"

Much love,
Jocelyn

You do not need to sell this life today. Anne Helen Petersen on trying to keep it together and the challenges of leaning into community: "What rescued me at the end of my long day of self-sufficiency wasn’t my best laid plans or my organized planner or my to-do lists. It was actual community and ethos of care. And after so many years of refining self-reliance amidst uncertainty — after my parents’ divorce, at college, in those first confusing years post-grad, in those prolonged confusing years in the academy and then digital journalism — it feels wild, wild!, to gradually and willingly rely on others."

Woman Stands Shining on humanity's homecoming. There is so much goodness in this interview with Woman Stands Shining (Pat McCabe). I particularly enjoyed her reflections on the inadequacy of viewing the world through a purely intellectual lens: "I often say that modern world paradigm is very intellectually driven. I mean, we're very, very much taught to rely almost exclusively on intellect. So I say, we do need intellect, I'm not trying to propose that there's no use for intellect, but I think we're way over-reliant on it...I have found opening up, what I'll call a broad spectrum of ways of knowing, that all of my spiritual practice has afforded me and allowed me to experience and what I have come to know and what my elders have told me is that the intellect is the least reliable way of knowing anything."

Poet Mary Ruefle on life without a computer. Ruefle does not own a computer and lives purely in analog. What a dream: "I write by hand because that is how I began, and I love it. Moving the wrist, the marks the pencil or pen leave on the paper—like the trail of a snail—well, it is like drawing, no, it is drawing, and I am so enamoured of this activity that sometimes I write continuously without actually forming real words, I call it ‘fake handwriting,’ and it’s just as much fun as actually ‘writing’. By fun I mean it’s just as much a mystery. The whole wrist-moving action is why I write in the first place. I don’t like tennis, or knitting, I like writing with my hands."

Making kinship beyond yourself, an interview with Richard Powers. I know I've been recommending a lot of Ezra Klein interviews lately but he's good! And this one with Overstory author Richard Powers is a real gem: "I think what was happening to me at that time, as I was turning outward and starting to take the non-human world seriously, is my sense of meaning was shifting from something that was entirely about me and authored by me outward into this more collaborative, reciprocal, interdependent, exterior place that involved not just me but all of these other ways of being that I could make kinship with. And when you make kinship beyond yourself, your sense of meaning gravitates outwards into that reciprocal relationship, into that interdependence. And you know, it’s a little bit like scales falling off your eyes. When you do turn that corner, all of the sources of anxiety that are so present and so deeply internalized become much more identifiable."
