3-2-1: 14 lessons from FAANG Staff Engineer, how Twitter process billions of events and how to adopt TypeScript

Hello my friends.

I will be on vacation for the next two weeks, so I will send you the next letter in December.

Here's what I picked this week. Enjoy :-)

💎 Tech & Dev World

1. Processing billions of events in real time at Twitter

TL;DR: The story of how Twitter went from the old architecture to the new architecture to handle billion of events. Problems, solutions and lessons.

Why I enjoyed it: For the last couple of months, I've become interested in architectural challenges. Articles like this one are gems to me.

2. I became a FAANG Staff Engineer in 5 years. These are the 14 lessons I learned along the way.

TL;DR: 14 lessons.

Why I enjoyed it: Who doesn't like articles with the title "X Lesson I Learned in X Years as TITLE"?

Favorite lines:

  • Based on my experience, your influence, not your code, is the most valuable asset in your career.
  • You can usually perfect imperfect code later if necessary. Save your fighting for the critical pieces; fix the rest later if you have to. Life’s too short to make every problem you come across one worth dying for.

3. Ask HN: What are some great engineering blogs?

TL;DR: A list of cool blogs about development.

🔥 Web Development

1. Etsy’s Journey to TypeScript

TL;DR: Story on how Etsy adopted TypeScript.

Why I enjoyed it: Lots of valuable lessons on how to transfer your entire codebase to TypeScript.

2. A Clever Sticky Footer Technique

TL;DR: Chris Coyier outlines a simple technique to stick a footer to the bottom of the screen.
