Brunch with Sifted: Beckley Psytech and the psychedelic renaissance

Meet Amanda Feilding and Cosmo Feilding-Mellen, the mother-son team at the head of one of the world’s leading experimental psychedelic medicine startups.

Sifted's Tim Smith heads to 16th-century hunting lodge Beckley Park — once Amanda's childhood home and now the HQ of Beckley Psytech — to talk mystic healing, treating depression and bringing psychedelics into mainstream medicine.

It's a good one.

Two-year-old audio platform Podimo raises $78m from London VCs

The Danish startup is looking to fill the gap between podcast platforms like Acast and audiobook companies like Storytel by focusing on local language content. It reckons it can overcome the difficulties other similar platforms have had in monetising audio content in the past too.

83North and Highland Europe led the Series B.

14 up-and-coming Dutch startups to watch, according to VCs

There's a new breed of startups taking over from Dutch old guard tech behemoths like Booking.com, Adyen and Takeaway.

Sifted spoke to investors from Peak, Eight Roads, Finch Capital and Life Sciences Partners to find out which under-the-radar startups are worth paying attention to.

Here's who they've got their eyes on.

European tech companies should be minting more millionaires

When Facebook went public in 2012, it minted 1,000 millionaires. When Klarna went public, it created just 75.

If Europe wants to emerge as a global tech powerhouse this has got to change, says partner at Frontline Ventures Finn Murphy.

Here's how that can happen.

Unleashed accelerator: How the class of 2021 are thriving

Pet tech is booming. Since lockdown more than three million British households have bought pets, and the market is due to almost triple to $275m in the States by 2030.

Supported by Purina's Unleashed accelerator, a number of European startups are hoping to make their mark on the sector.

From fresh pet food startups to digital vets, here's how the 2021 cohort is doing.

News That Matters

💰 We've raised £4m! Sifted's round was led by ScaleUp Capital, while the FT remains a core shareholder. We'll be using the extra cash to double our headcount over the next 12 months. Want to join the party? Check out our open roles here.

🇩🇪 DocPlanner enters Germany. The Polish healthcare platform has acquired its German counterpart Jameda and says it plans to invest €250m into the market over the next few years. It's a big play for the healthtech as it looks to keep up with other startups like Kry, Zava and Healthhero, who've been on their own acquisition sprees this year.

🛒 Grocery delivery startup Yababa has raised a huge seed round. The Berlin-based startup has bagged $15.5m from Creandum and Project A. It's focused on multicultural produce, serving Arab and Turkish communities for now. It's the latest in a wave of ethnic grocery delivery startups, following a madcap year for sector.

💸 Payhawk snaps up $112m. The Bulgarian-founded enterprise spend management startup has hit a valuation of $570m, in eastern Europe's second-biggest Series B ever. It comes just seven months after the company raised a $20m Series A, and will fund the startup's expansion into three continents.

🛍️ Getir buys Weezy. Europe's most valuable speedy grocery delivery startup has bought its smaller UK competitor as it looks to consolidate its grip on the UK market. Amid rounds galore in the sector this year, investors say just one or two will emerge victorious. Getir will be hoping this acquisition puts it firmly on the winning trajectory.

🌟 Paris Hilton steps onto the European startup scene. Switzerland's Origyn Foundation has raised $20m from a number of investors including Bill Ackman’s Table Management, Polychain Capital and the one and only Paris Hilton. The startup verifies the authenticity of valuable physical and digital objects — including NFTs.

💡 Energy startup Bulb collapses. The green energy company — crowned the fastest-growing startup in Europe by the FT earlier this year — has fallen into administration. It's the largest of more than 20 British energy companies to have gone bust amid the energy crisis in Europe, and exposes the difficulties faced by "challengers" in the market.
