Etsy’s Journey to TypeScript

We already talked about Airbnb’s way of migrating a huge codebase to TypeScript. In 2017, Dropbox converted its codebase to TS from coffeescript. Now Etsy (17K+ files) tell their fascinating story.

Interestingly enough, they went ahead with the strictest TypeScript configuration right away (something which most companies avoid doing) plus getting even stricter on top of that using eslint (for example, prohibiting non-null assertions and type assertions).

That bold move forced them to migrate files one by one, which was physically viable only because they decided to onboard teams one by one.

Announcing TypeScript 4.5

TypeScript 4.5 is released. I didn’t see any particular exciting updates, but the “Awaited” helper type is quite useful.

Automatic batching for fewer renders in React 18

React 18 is currently in beta. I just came across this beautiful write-up by Dan Abramov where he explains how React does the batching and how it will change in React version 18 (use ReactDOM.createRoot to take advantage of it).

Another great addition is the startTransition API which allows you to mark some UI updates as non-urgent, and thus make the interaction of urgent parts faster. If you’re using React, have a look.

Hawkeye

The first two episodes of the Hawkeye were released this week. Despite being a little bit slow, I liked the Christmas atmosphere, the non-trivial characters, and the chemistry between Clint and Kate.

This series will seemingly have a more profound influence on the MCU, introducing several new characters, which is excellent.
