Next.js 12 is here with Rust compiler which apparently is super-fast (we’ll see), Middleware (it’s a bit weird they didn’t have middlewares?), React 18 Support (might be awesome), Native ESM Support (meh), URL Imports, React Server Components (alpha), and more!

Trie in Javascript: the Data Structure behind Autocomplete

Trie (pronounced as “try”) is a very effective data structure which can be used for word autocomplete or spell checking. It is extremely fast even compared to a binary search in a sorted array. This article shows how to implement it in JavaScript.

While we’re at it, let me also mention this fantastic book on algorithms. It’s very short, not overloaded with details and very approachable for anyone who just starts with the topic or just need it for an interview. It’s the first algorithm book that I read from cover to cover and come back to it often to refresh my knowledge. Highly recommend!

What's New In DevTools (Chrome 96)

New Chrome brings some nice updates to our beloved DevTools. I’m particularly excited to try out the CSS Overview panel which gives you some insights about CSS used. For example, it can highlight the CSS blocks that are not being used. More about it here.

If you use react, you’d be happy to be able to copy style declarations as JS so that “text-align: centre” will become {textAlign: “centre”}. Quite handy I would say.

Tree shaking is a way to eliminate dead code (something that was exported but was never imported somewhere else). As it turns out the process is not straightforward, and it will not work at all or will not work as efficiently unless you follow some rules and best practices. Read this article to know more.

JavaScript behaviour is very extensible with monkey patching and some meta-programming. The author of this article shows how you can use it to gracefully shoot yourself in the foot. Not a single example should ever be used in production code, still it’s very educative to learn about those tricks.

Hoisting in Modern JavaScript — let, const, and var

A very nice article I found explaining how the hoisting works and why it works differently for const/let and var. Hoisting is one of the fundamental notion of JavaScript and understanding it will allow you to avoid a whole class of bugs.

Inside Job

I’d like to recommend you a great show called Inside Job. It’s not as ingenious as Rick&Morty, but it’s in a similar vein. I’m half through the first season and so far it delivers.
