GROWTH INSIGHTS | Don't Like This Tweet.
What does a "Like" on Twitter really matter, anyway?
I stumbled upon a Twitter Space last week with the title along the lines of "Stop liking tweets—it doesn't help creators."
It nabbed my attention... So I hopped in and listened to the hosts plead their case.
The Case Against Likes
I'm a serial tweet "liker".
Subconsciously, I know merely liking someone's tweet isn't moving the needle. A like isn't really helping them out. Someone liking my tweet isn't really going to help me out.
My realization: liking a tweet is a mindless & lazy way to engage. And I do it ALL.THE.TIME.
The folks in this Twitter Space are onto something. Liking tweets has become a compulsion. The first thing I do when I get a notification is to hit 'like' on the tweet.
And I didn't realize how bad it was... until I made a conscious effort to NOT like a tweet for a day.
Try it. You'll see what I mean.

What does a like truly get you?
A tiny bump in the algorithm?
A bit of signal?
Sure... but what if we all left a comment or retweeted these tweets we're compulsively liking instead? How much more of an algorithmic boost or signal would that be for the person tweeting?
THAT—that right there ↑— is what the folks in this Space were getting at. They weren't being ungrateful bastards. Their point was to take an extra 5-10 seconds and leave a reply or quote RT instead of just a like.
Reply > Quote RT > RT > Like > nothing
After sending out that tweet above, I got a few replies. 🙈
Many agreed and were receptive, and others shared screenshots:

I saw a Twitter Space titled:
"Stop 'liking' tweets — it doesn't help creators."
And as a serial 'liker'… it caught my attention.
I'm gonna go a day without liking any tweets. Instead I'll…
> reply to a tweet if my initial instinct is to ♥ it
> or RT / quote RT

My tweet about not liking tweets showed up in someone's feed BECAUSE it got likes. Joke's on me!...?
I still stand by the main sentiment: Likes are better than nothing, but not by much.
There's a strong chance the algorithm served my tweet due to the overall engagement.
Others offered up that likes are a kind way to respond to general/unhelpful replies like "Great post!" or "Thanks!"
I'll concede there's a gray area. Hence, the hybrid solution ↓↓
The Best (Hybrid) Solution
I'm done giving out my 💜's as a commodity.
Nobody wins, especially not me.
SOLUTION: Mike's suggestion below of a like + comment resonates. I'm going to make an effort to never leave only a like. Instead, I'll leave a reply + like. Or at minimum, just a reply. Never just a like.

What do you think?
Was this topic really worth all of this effort? I think so. Because instead of just liking tweets this week, I replied with intention instead of tapping hearts with compulsion.
And it felt good to properly engage again.

It was January 2021. I saw the little sailboat of Ship 30 For 30 becoming a cruise ship right before my very eyes:
Endless screenshots of "mini essays" were filling my Twitter feed with the hashtag #ship30for30. It was a rapidly growing, vibrant and supportive community of writers improving their skills and creating opportunities with every essay they'd write + publish.
