Geeta Pandey - [#5] Alchemy of fear

You can leverage your fear for success
Alchemy Of Fear

In popular culture, fear has been associated with weakness and negative traits.

Movies tell us people fear when they are weak, in danger, or about to lose the fight.

However, it is at best only a superficial representation of fear.

Fear is a complex emotion and is deeply connected with our inner-self.

Some can be fearful of height and speed, while others crave these adventures.
Some can be fearful of being alone, while others long for solitude.

Thus external events do not cause fear. You feel fear due to something internal and deeply personal. Your fear tells a lot about you and goes back to your inherent nature.

Fear itself does not represent weakness or strength; it just represents a part of your personality. How you choose to react in the face of fear represents your weakness or strength. Your reaction to fear shades it positive or negative.

Fear can be your trusted friend, a counsel, a consigliere.

If you can see through the popular narrative built around fear and free yourself from it, you can learn to use fear as a propellant for your growth.

Today, I will show you ways to understand and leverage your fear for your growth and success.

Origin of fear

Long ago, before the formation of societies, humans lived in wild jungles, mountains, and caves.

Alone to fend and feed themselves, they learned to rely on their fears for survival — fear of night, fear of wild animals, fear of being far away from their settlements, and fear of the unknown.

Since early humans lived under these fears for millennia, the use of fear as a survival mechanism has been hardwired in all of us from birth.

When faced with a life-threatening fear, our mind-body field responds in a similar fashion like those early humans — palms begin to sweat, the body begins producing more white blood cells as if it is fighting a disease, and heart rate shoots up.

As humans developed intellect, they found answers to many unknowns. They discovered why it rains, why it gets dark in the night, how to hunt wild animals, and so on.

Govern by knowledge, they stopped fearing these phenomena.

Similarly, with the right knowledge, tools, and practice, you can win over your fears and leverage them for your success.

Face off with the fear

Fear is of three kinds:

  1. Fear due to habit patterns of mind: You may fear heights, speed, water, public speaking, needles, or insects. It is very easy to be aware of this fear and win over it. Someone with stage fear can become a prolific public speaker with the right guidance, practice, and determination.
  2. Fear due to discomfort: You may fear appearing for an interview or resigning from your job to start a business. Uncomfortable situations cause fear. It is a bit difficult to win over this kind of fear in totality, but you can subdue it with the help of Pranayama, journaling, expert guidance, and even by just showing up and keeping the spirits high.
  3. Fear due to intuition: You return home after the day's work and unlock the door to enter your house. You switch on the lights, and something feels off. You can't pinpoint exactly what, everything is as you left it in the morning, but you have a bad feeling about it. You panic, sweat rolled down your temple, and you picked up a baseball bat from a corner. You check all the rooms one by one, and then with your heartbeat racing, you move upstairs. The same moment you hear a sound from your bedroom, you reach there only to find your bedroom's window broken and your valuables lying on your bed.

The thief had left no clues at the entrance, but your intuition detected and warned you as soon as you entered the house. There are numerous incidents of people feeling similar fear out of nowhere just before something bad is about to happen.

The response to this fear determines whether they save themselves or become a victim. This is the trickiest kind of fear. If you can leverage it correctly, it can help you in unimaginable ways.

A different perspective

If you can broaden your view, you will quickly realize the ways fear can help you.

Fear can:
  1. Warn you of upcoming danger.
  2. Save you from taking uncalculated risks.
  3. Help you understand what is doable and what should be avoided.
  4. Help you focus, prioritize and perform under pressure.

The trick is to understand the nature of fear — whether fear is serving you in your goals or preventing you from growth.

Once you identify the reason behind fear, you will be able to find a way to use it or ignore it.

Many times growth in life depends on taking chances and risks. Courage doesn't mean the absence of fear, it means that knowing the risk, you choose to take action because the benefits of action outweigh the pain or discomfort of associated risks.

If you can strike a balance to use courage to make decisions and fear to avoid unnecessary risks, you can rely on your fear for your growth.
