Morfternight

by Paolo Belcastro

👋 Hello Reader!

Greetings from Vienna!

All previous issues of Morfternight were also sent from this beautiful city I call home, but as I have barely left my neighborhood in the past twenty months, it didn't occur to me to mention that detail.

I look forward to a change of scenery as I am getting ready to spend the holidays in the center of France. Baby steps, let's start by traveling to a very isolated place where I'll basically be de facto almost quarantined.

From the shortest night of the year, I present you Morfternight, the newsletter that has a solstice!

🛩

Feeling ready

In the 10 years that preceded the Covid pandemic, I traveled 143 times to 135 cities across 29 countries for a total of 943 days, covering 1,147,642 km. That's as much as going to the Moon, coming back, and then going there again. Or flying 28 times around the World.

Since March 2020, I have only left Vienna for five days, visiting Salzburg, 300km away from home. I spent the other 650 days within walking distance from my flat.

Today I fly again! I feel pretty excited, even though I wish everything about traveling was simpler.

👓

Speaking of flying, this month marked the last shipment of an Airbus A380, followed soon by the final Boeing 747.

The Concorde was small and focused on speed. The 747 and A380 are slower but gigantic. Now it seems that aviation is reaching a level of maturity where rationality wins over pushing boundaries.
It's definitely better for our planet and the comfort of passengers. Yet it is a bit sad that planes, like cars, end up looking all the same. However, the reality is that physics and rationality dictate this mimetism in design.

🖋

This too shall pass

When you feel that everything is going terribly and also when you feel invincible, remember that this too shall pass.

Read this short essay I wrote about life explained through trigonometry. As a bonus, at the end of the post, you'll find a word of wisdom from Tom Hanks.

🖖

That's it for today! You can find more of my stuff on paolo.blog, and if you think that someone you know could enjoy Morfternight, the newsletter to share, please forward it to them or send them this link to subscribe.

Cheers!
