Juno

Remi Wolf

Album Cover 2
Genre: Juno
Release Date: October 15th, 2021
Top Tracks: Sexy Villian, Guerilla, wyd
Similar Artists: Wafia, Ashe, Mallrat

Remi Wolf’s latest album Juno is a ton of fun. Just a fun album all around. You won’t find many moments of silence on Juno, just a vast variety of different upbeat sounds all hitting your ears at seemingly the same time, yet choreographed perfectly. Remi Wolf’s lyrics have got a ton of sass (in the best way possible) and she will drop an F bomb like your ornery uncle, but that’s just all part of the fun. She doesn’t follow many conventional ways of putting lyrics together, you get the feeling she’s almost figuring it out as she goes, saying whatever the hell she wants, and flowing so well that you don’t even bat an eye. She even sings like a country singer for about 20 seconds on ‘Grumpy Old Man’ just to be goofy and throws some Kanye-level autotune on a lyric or two every once in a while. The producers on this album seemed to also feed off of this spontaneity and it all keeps you constantly on your toes and hooked. Fun album.

Bicep

Cover 2
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: January 22nd, 2021
Top Tracks: Apricots, Fir, Atlas
Similar Artists: Four Tet, Bonobo, George Fitzgerald

After listening to Bicep sporadically for the past couple of years, I knew their early 2021 release was an absolute must-listen and must-review. I was pretty shocked to learn that it’s only their second full-length album. In just a short amount of time, the duo has taken the electronic world by underground-storm and earned the respect of many in the industry. This album is their classic breakbeat low-key, high-tempo house style. Building and beautiful stringed melodies sit underneath rich hi-hat drum patterns that wrap the listener in a full luscious forest of sound.

I loved learning about Bicep for this review. Apparently the UK duo started out of their now infamous FeelMyBicep blog that they started in 2008. The blog grew steadily from part-time hobby to full-time industry-influencing success... and they’re still putting out content and reviews on the site! Check out this article where the duo breaks down how they went from bloggers to superstars.

Free Love

Sylvan Esso

Cover 3
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: September 25th, 2020
Top Tracks: Ferris Wheel, Rooftop Dancing, Frequency
Similar Artists: STRFKR, Whitney, RAC

You could certainly call this album electronic (indeed it was nominated in the genre for the 2022 Grammys) but I would argue it has a more indie feel to it, albeit with notable electronic inspired production. Sylvan Esso is the marriage of vocalist Amelia Meath and producer Nick Sanborn, bother former folk band members that have carried the folk sound moving forward. While their past projects have featured a stark division of labor, “Free Love” was truly a joint effort as both crossed over into each others areas of expertise. The beauty of this album is in its simplicity. Layered soft-spoken vocals are paired with pure electronic beats that come together to produce a polished set of indie-pop anthems. With lyrics that pack a punch, these songs will have you at times tapping your foot and at others, lost in self-reflection - the mark of a truly great album.

The Golden Age Of Wireless

Thomas Dolby

Cover 4
Genre: Rock
Release Date: May 13th, 1982
Top Tracks: She Blinded Me With Science, Weightless, Europa And The Pirate Twins
Similar Artists: Modern English, Men Without Hats, Duran Duran

Calling an album The Golden Age Of Wireless (1982) before Bluetooth was invented (1994) was a bold move by Thomas Dolby. This album is like Footloose meets A Space Odyssey in my mind because it was released during the height of the classic rock era but is quite futuristic in sound. Not every song is put together perfectly so you’ll find yourself thrown off every once in a while, but there is way more good than bad in this release. The starter track “She Blinded Me With Science” is the must-listen here if you only have time for one.

Tickets to my Downfall

Machine Gun Kelly

Cover 5
Genre: Pop
Release Date: September 25th, 2020
Top Tracks: Title Track, Bloody Valentine, Jawbreaker, Lonely
Similar Artists: Iann Dior, Mod Sun, Yungblud

Tickets to my Downfall released around my spike in music interest it was the first album that I really was invested in the release of. The track lonely also means alot to me.
