Album Daily Week #108 [December 6 - 10]

Hej alla! (aka "hello everyone" in Swedish)

You may be wondering... why the Swedish intro? Well, in case you haven't been on Instagram or Twitter in the last few days, it is officially Spotify Wrapped season and the dominant music streaming platform was founded in Stockholm, Sweden! As you may imagine, the Spotify Wrapped marketing campaign / feature has been extremely successful for Spotify. But how successful? Two of the most important metrics for any B2C software company are: App Downloads & Daily Active Users (DAU). In 2020, Spotify Wrapped lead to a 21% increase in App Downloads in the first week of December and they also saw the highest ever Daily Active Users for that same week! Here are some charts for those visual folks provided to us by moengage.

Sunflower

Briston Maroney

Album Cover 2
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: April 9, 2021
Top Tracks: It's Still Cool If You Don't, Rollercoaster, Cinnamon
Similar Artists: Hippo Campus, Gus Dapperton, Casual Vice

You've heard of garage rock… but have you heard of grungy basement house party rock? That's the image I can't get out of my head when I hear Sunflower by Briston Maroney. It's garage rock but even more raw than that. There's some undeniable melody and song writing talented that's just begging to break out. Briston doesn't try to be something he's not in his songwriting, however, but still manages to open up to listeners.

On Deep Sea Diver he's speaking from what I can only assume is the reality of being offered ketamine in Bowling Green.

And then on Cinnamon he's completely venerable saying "And it's clear the house we built of blankets, it's the only dream I'm chasing."

A wide range of emotional offerings here on Sunflower, each worth listening to. Check out Briston Maroney's breakout track "Freakin' Out On the Interstate". Interestingly, we also get a track on Sunflower titled 'Interstate'.

Yours

Sara Gazarek

Cover 2
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: August 23, 2005
Top Tracks: Yours, You Got By, Blackbird
Similar Artists: Tony Bennet, Sara Bareilles, Ella Fitzgerald

Ranging from jazz standards by the likes of Cole Porter and Irving Berlin to contemporary classics from Joni Mitchell to original self written tracks, Yours by Sara Gazarek covers all the bases and still feels fresh for a jazz album that came out in 2005. It has the kind of timeless feel that means you could throw it on for your whole family and everyone would find something to like. Gazarek’s voice is charming and earnest. When in the title track she sings:

“Forget the things that people say to try to hurt you
Forget their fears that overtake them in their lives
Forget this world with all it's petty disappointments
But don't forget that you’re the lovely person I love so.”

It’s hard not to take her for her word. This sense of hope continues throughout the album, even through the heartbreak of “You Got By” and especially during an arrangement that combines “Bye Bye Blackbird” popularized by Miles Davis and The Beatles’ “Blackbird”. Gazarek has her chops and knows how to use them." In addition to her smooth honey-like vocals, Gazarek contributed all of the arrangements for her album. Here she is with longtime collaborator Josh Nelson on their arrangement of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes”. This version encourages the listener towards stillness. Take a moment for yourself and indulge.

Olympia

Gorgon City

Cover 3
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Top Tracks: You've Done Enough, House Arrest, Nobody
Similar Artists: Lane 8, Elderbrook, SNBRN

Beautiful melodic house music - Gorgon City’s “Olympia” does not miss. It’s the kind of electronic music you can listen to whether you’re chilling on the back porch or looking for a little groove on the dance floor. Gorgon City expertly collaborates with vocalists to combine light dreamy lyrics with their smooth baselines to create mystical soundscapes that effortlessly flow from drop to drop. This album also features what has to have been one of the most fitting songs of the pandemic “House Arrest” alongside Sofi Tukker. As Gorgon City themselves quipped, “Just because we are under “house arrest” doesn’t mean we can’t go to the club in our minds.” Someone put that on a billboard.

Aura

Anduze

Cover 4
Genre: Funk
Release Date: September 24, 2021
Top Tracks: Julie, Stone Cold Lover, Gone 2 Long
Similar Artists: Durand Jones, Jungle, Pink Noisy

Groovy bass lines, a radiant brass section, and a buttery smooth voice. It’s a tale as old as time and Anduze three for three. With influences like Marvin Gaye and James Brown, Anduze often evokes their retro sounds in his work. He’s the type of artist you’d stumble upon at your local jazz kitchen expecting the same old tunes … but then proceed to stay for the next several hours transfixed by his new school sound. Anduze is a relatively unknown artist with some major talent, so let’s show him some love by following him on the gram.

The Dip Delivers

The Dip

Cover 5
Genre: Soul
Release Date: November 15, 2018
Top Tracks: Sure Don't Miss You, Adeline, Slow Sipper
Similar Artists: St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Durand Jones & The Indications, Aaron Taylor

Just like your favorite pizza place… The Dip Delivers. But instead of piping hot pizza that always seems to burn the roof of your mouth with the first bite, The Dip delivers style and swagger in a box of soulful R&B. This group out of the northwest USA is described by a Seattle radio station (KEXP) as “one of the most exciting and joyous acts to emerge in recent years.” This album is music designed to accompany your Sunday morning routine and dancing around the house Risky Business-style.
