Album Daily Week #107 [November 29th - December 3rd]

Happy Thanksgiving Pals! We hope your weekend was filled with copious amounts of turkey, tasty side dishes, and even tastier beats.

Amongst the hustle and bustle of the holiday week, you may have missed the Grammy nominations being released last Tuesday. There were a flurry of familiar names on the list like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Kanye West, and just as many notable snubs including Drake, BTS, and Porter Robinson. There's nothing quite like the drama of award season to get the people going, so lets us know! Who was the biggest snub of the 2022 grammy noms?

Now, turn your speakers up and enjoy this week's albums!

Romare

Album Cover 2
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: July 31st, 2020
Top Tracks: Heaven, Deliverance, Gone
Similar Artists: LCD Soundsystem, Jamie XX, George Fitzgerald

I know I know… we feature a lot of electronic music here on Album Daily. "bUt ThIs OnEs DiFfErEnT" - he said about every album that they featured. But this one really is different, I swear! I hope you'll at least give us the grace that we feature a wide variety of electronic music.

This 2020 absolute novel of an album does have a little bit of something for everyone I believe. With the majority of the songs on the album being 6+ minutes long, you know that you're in for an album that holds together well, and honestly holds together best, when it's listened to in its entirety. My favorite track is the 10 minute beast of an adventure ""Heaven"". I like to think about a little SIMS character walking along going about his everyday life to the song.

Romare has produced music across the gambit of electronic music. His 2016 album was much more disco/funk and this 2020 one is much more ambient or "Deep Study House". In fact, you can find it on this Spotify playlist that's literally called "To Do List", designed to help you accomplish things on your to-do list.

Self Made Man

Larkin Poe

Cover 2
Genre: Rock
Release Date: June 12th, 2020
Top Tracks: Holy Ghost Fire, Tears Of Blue To Gold, Back Down South
Similar Artists: Adia Victoria, North Mississippi Allstars, Black Pistol Fire

Don’t let the name of this album lead you astray. Larkin Poe is a female duo comprised of two kick-ass sisters: Rebecca & Megan. They’re both immensely talented, multi-instrument rockstars with an appreciation for the blues. American Songwriter puts it best when they describe Larkin Poe’s take on blues as “pure, decades old Delta style, pumped up for arena sized consumption without compromising any of its stripped down command and intensity.” As made incredibly popular by Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” the clap-beat is a staple on Self Made Man that adds a live performance feel to many of the tracks. Clap along, sing along, and rock out.

Wait a tick, what is Delta style blues? According to Britannica, Delta style blues (aka Mississippi Delta blues) is a regional style of American folk music that originated in Northwestern Mississippi. This style of blues rose during the 1920's and 30's and then served as the foundation of Chicago blues, electric blues, and the folk blues revival in the post-World War II years.

The Long Way Home

Aaron Taylor

Cover 3
Genre: Soul
Release Date:  August 24th, 2018
Top Tracks: I Think I Love You Again, Get Through This, Jaded
Similar Artists: Stevie Wonder, Yazmin Lacey, Dijon

Come get your ears some neo-Soul. Of a list of top-20 Neo-Soul and R&B artists you should know by Pink Wafer, Aaron Taylor is described as staying, “truest to the roots of neo-soul.” Taylor’s style of neo-soul typically features a minimalistic/groovy R&B beat, a jazzy spirit, and a variety of flair you’d come to expect from the “neo” version of a genre. I truly love the tracks I Think I Love You Again and Get Through This as perfect products of Taylor’s unique vision.

Fun fact: the term neo-soul was coined by music industry entrepreneur Kedar Massenburg (president of Motown Records from ’97 to ’04) during the late 1990s according to Wikipedia.

Carolina Confessions

The Marcus King Band

Cover 4
Genre: Rock
Release Date: October 5th, 2018
Top Tracks: 8 a.m., Homesick, Confessions
Similar Artists: Derek Trucks, Alabama Shakes, Chris Stapleton

Are you the person at the backyard drinking party that's likely to break into screams of "SKYNNNARDDDDD" when you hear the infamous intro riff to 'Simple Man'? Or are you the person that will tell anyone who will listen, and several who won't, that country music died when the CMAs were formed? If either of these scenarios have played out in your life before, then we think you're going to enjoy Caroline Confessions by The Marcus King Band.

Southern Rock & Soulful Country Music ain't dead yet baby. A wonderful blend of the Alabama Shakes, Chris Stapleton and Broken Bones, The Marcus King Band has just the right amount of soul, horn section,  sweet pandering lyrics about 'life back home' and bluesy guitar licks. This 2018 album is the perfect length at just 10 tracks that will leave you wanting for more.

Marcus King, the frontman for the band, has recently released a solo album produced by none other than Album Daily veteran Dan Auerbach. Look for reviews of that album forthcoming!

So Long Forever

Palace

Cover 5
Genre: Indie-Alternative
Release Date: November 4th, 2016
Top Tracks: Live Well, Bitter, Have Faith
Similar Artists: Whitney, The Districts, Yellow Days

So Long Forever comes as the first album from the indie folk-rock band, Palace.  The songs never feel rushed, but still pack an emotional punch, dripping in reflection and melancholy. Lead singer, Leo Wyndham's voice is approachable and allows the group to dive into heavier topics throughout the album, including his own adversity and personal change. Overall, So Long Forever comes as a dreamy set of tunes and a perfect complement to those laid-back fall evenings.
