NichePursuits.com - What in the Wordle!?

In 2013, Josh Wardle created a prototype of a little word game.

The idea was simple, you get 6 tries to guess a 5 letter word. With each guess, the game highlights the letters you got correct.

Oh, but you can only play once a day.

That's it.

After letting it sit on the shelf for years, he dusted it off for friends and family during the pandemic and they loved it!

So, in October 2021 he made the game public.

On Nov. 1st, 2021...90 people played the game. On January 2nd, 2022, 300,000 people played the game.

And as of Monday (Jan. 10th, 2022), the game has over 2.7 million players!

What in the Wordle just happened here!?

As a few people played the game, they loved it. And in November a large tech blogger mentioned it on his blog and that helped jumpstart things.

But then Josh made some minor tweaks to make it even more shareable after that, and boy things went nuts (Tonight Show mention, NY times coverage, Twitter mania, etc).

As far as I can tell, there are a few elements that have helped Wordle go viral (maybe you can apply some of these ideas to your business):

• Takes only a few seconds to learn
• The puzzle challenges you, but doesn't take long to complete.
• The game is fun.
• Everyone in the world completes the same word each day, so its fun to share your results with friends. (i.e. acceptable bragging).
• The results are crazy easy to share and obvious how to do it.
• The design is super clean with no distractions.

But has Wordle made any money?

No.

Josh Wardle created it for fun and wants to keep it that way.

However, you can't help but think it has lead to or will lead to some amazing opportunties career or business wise thanks to its rapid success.

I'm not saying he should...but what if he had display ads on the site?

Let's say the site is getting 2 million pageviews a day (it could be much more by now).

The RPM is probably going to be on the lower end...perhaps $5 to $8.

That's still potentially $10,000 to $16,000....PER DAY!

Again, I'm not saying he should try to monetize it, but if it was me...I sure would be tempted!
