Video Styles to Overhaul Your Educational Content

Educational video resources have proven to be versatile and reliable tools to engage audiences in most creators’ content strategies. But it can be difficult to discern how to pick the right types to gain attention and elicit reactions from your viewers. Let’s explore some options.

Tours: Give your audience a glimpse into your space to give them a grounded perspective of your content creation. You could take them to a museum exhibition, an exotic place you’re visiting, etc. Video tours are effective at educating and cultivating engagement.

Whiteboard animations: Most of us have attended physical classrooms where the teacher wrote the lessons on a board (chalk, white, or smart). Boards like those are a valuable teaching device. Whiteboard animated videos are born out of the same concept. Since the illustrations come to life in a single, continuous take, the format has proven ideal to tackle complex and detailed topics. This style lets learners see an entire process, which allows for better viewer retention. They also are ideal for quickly delivering a lot of information.

How-to: They are the bread-and-butter of video social media because it’s usually easier to see how to do something than to read how to do it. How-to videos also can be helpful in search engine optimization as users often look for help in how to complete a task or execute a project.

Motion graphics: This technique lets you use graphic elements (such as colors and shapes) in motion to convey your message clearly. It’s ideal for delivering information that’s normally difficult to understand and memorize – complex concepts, numerical data, word sequences, calculations, etc.

Character videos: Custom-designed animated characters bring a touch of familiarity and personality to your videos. Viewers can easily identify and attach to sympathetic characters and engaging storytelling. They can work well for easing viewers into a challenging topic as well as synthesizing and framing essential issues in a non-confrontational way.

For educational content of all kinds, it's hard to find a better medium than video. But making great educational videos starts with picking the best format and style for your audience and your content brand.

  • Tumblr Tips: The donation jar is rolling out on the virtual shelves at Tumblr. The platform won’t take a cut and won’t use Apple or Google internal billing systems that tack on 30% in fees. Max tip is $100. (Tech Crunch; h/t tl;drMarketing)

  • Gold rush: “Creative entrepreneurs are changing the way startups are born … These innovators are building a fan base on social media and a personal brand.     Tilt Take: The revolution is well underway. While the conversation still focuses on social media fans, expect that to change in a Web3 world.
Audiences
  • Go cheaper: Newsletter creators say acquiring subscribers through Facebook and Instagram ads is too expensive. They’re looking to diversify into channels with better ROI. (Sparkloop; h/t IdeaEconomy)
    Tilt Take: Finding the most effective promotion and advertising tactics should always involve testing multiple channels.
  • A negative plus: Disney+ streaming subscribers plateaued in 2021. So Disney decided to grow the numbers by making it automatic in its Hulu offerings. As Martin Peers writes: “It’s a reminder that the customer-unfriendly DNA of the television industry still lurks in the genes of companies like Disney.” (The Information Briefing)
    Tilt Take: It’s also a lesson in why a collaboration or acquisition might be a good audience growth strategy.
Tech and Tools
  • Stop moving: Instagram likes video, so make static videos. Post several images into a one- to two-second video. (Matt Navarra)
    Tilt Take: It’s often all about gaming the algorithm.
  • Community guidelines: TikTok updated its community guidelines this week, clarifying what content will be removed or made ineligible for recommendations. It now explicitly states hateful ideologies, including deadnaming, misgendering, and misogyny, and support for conversion therapy are on that list. (tubefilter)
    Tilt Take: Private platforms have the right to control their communities. How do you guide yours? Put it in writing.
And Finally
  • Permanent vacation: Meta warns it may shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe due to its data regulations. European leaders seem fine with that. (Euronews; h/t Supercreator.ai)
    Tilt Take: Another reminder that you have no control over the social media platforms on which you build a business.
  • More NFTs: Gaming powerhouse Zynga increases the score for NFT-based gaming. Blockchain/NFT games tie in-game objects to unique IDs that can be bought or sold in real life. It’s growing its NFT staff from 15 to at least 70 this year. (Axios Gaming)
    Tilt Take: The NFT monetization opportunities for creators will only grow.
