Do YOU Really Want "That"? + 26 Niche Sites for Sale

I always thought I wanted things because I personally wanted them. I set my own goals, I create my own “wish list” of accomplishments, things, etc.

Right?

Well, in his book, “Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life" by Luke Burgis the author argues quite convincingly that we tend to want things or pursue desires primarily because we see others wanting things.

We aren’t very original beings. We like to copy. We like to mimic.

I found this book quite fascinating, perhaps due to the subject matter. I’ll give it an 8.5/10!

Mimetic desire in our lives is extremely real and pervasive as demonstrated by many examples in the book.

One of the few innate attributes that we are born with according to the author is our desire to copy. Studies have been shown that babies less than a day old will mimic facial expressions or stick out their tongue to copy adults around them.

As we grow, we copy those around us to learn language, walking, and quite frankly everything is mimetic.

A quote from the book, “Desire, like gravity, does not reside autonomously in any one thing or person. It lives in the space between them.”

We are constantly looking at our neighbors, friends, enemies, heroes, and everyone else around us to discover what we should want.

We always follow a “model” of desire.

We don’t randomly want to run a marathon. We see friends running marathons and then we decide that we want that too (yep, this includes me).

We don’t spontaneously decide that we want to start a niche website and put tons of hours of work into it. We see other wanting or having a large and successful website and we seek to want what they want.

Once our basic needs in life are met, it’s extremely difficult to decide what we truly want in life. And if we aren’t careful we will live our entire lives wanting what others want and pursuing ideals that perhaps are shallow in nature.

How do we combat mimetic desires? A couple of quotes from the book:

“A hierarchy of values is an antidote to mimetic conformity.”

“Values and desires are not the same thing. Values act to order desires the way they do a diet.”

You can have “thin” desires (shallow) or pursue “thick” desires (positive, productive, and worthwhile).

Are you simply checking Facebook and then immediately realizing you want a cool cactus plant in your backyard after seeing one of your friends have one? (or any number of other positive or negative memetic desires).

Are you reading this book review and suddenly realizing that you desire to read this book too because Spencer enjoyed it? Congrats, you now have a mimetic desire!

Do I really want a donut? Or do I only want a donut because I saw someone else enjoying a donut?

I’m not sure, I just know I want a donut.

Overall, it’s a great book and actually dives pretty deep into conflict, desire, how society works, business, psychology, and a whole lot more.
