GROWTH INSIGHTS | How to Get Lucky on Purpose
"Again?!? You've got horseshoes up your butt!"
My brother won everything when we were growing up. Well, not everything—but that's how it felt.
Every time we'd go to the grocery store, he'd crank the candy vending machines and candy would come out. It seemed like he was always getting lucky finding dollar bills, winning contests, or finding coins in arcade games.
It seemed like luck followed him.
But luck had little to do with his random winnings. He was simply doing things that I wasn't.
He was getting lucky on purpose.
He was creating his own luck: entering contests, looking in vending machines for candy and arcade games for coins.
I'd try one vending machine for candy, he'd try them all. More vending machines = more free candy opportunity.
My brother wasn't so lucky as much as he was consistent.
Are you creating your own luck?
The simple lesson here is pretty clear. You're not going to build a creator business without a fair shake. Without a little bit (a lot) of consistency.
Packy McCormick from Not Boring once wrote, "Every tweet is a free lottery ticket."
Grab more tweet tickets for more chances to "win". The same goes for your content, your products, and your courses.
Publishing zero gives you a zero percent chance of getting lucky. You'll never hit a homerun if you don't start swinging (sorry for all the half-baked analogies...)
So what does creating your own luck look like? It looks like "more"—and "more" consistently.
I'm not suggesting you burn yourself out on a hamster wheel of content creation with no end in sight—I'm instead suggesting you will accelerate your chances for success in "The Great Online Game" by trying more vending machines and tweeting out more lottery tickets.
No, it's not easy, but it IS simple:
→ Tweet more and you're more likely to create connections, grow an audience and build some traction. Look at Dickie Bush.
→ Write more newsletters and you're more likely to improve, find your rhythm, and find your audience. Look at Packy McCormick.
→ Film & edit more YouTube videos and they're going to get better—as will your chances of growing your channel. Look at Lilly Singh.
→ Record more podcast episodes and you'll grow your network, audience, interviewing skills and—yep—your opportunities. Look at Danny Miranda.
→ Build more apps and increase the your chances of getting to that MRR you dream of. Look at Pieter Levels.
Is consistent content creation hard? It can be. For sure.
It can also depend how much you enjoy it, and how badly you want to find that candy.
Know your limits—but don't give up too quickly...
YOUR GROWTH CURRENCY ⚡ THIS WEEK
"Knowledge is the currency of growth."
⚡ This is How I Make $5,000/mo Writing Online (Even though I'm "ordinary") by Jon Brosio [🧵]
This thread by Jon isn't the commoditized platitudes you'll often find on the bird app. Rather, he gives you some tactical guidance about how you can follow his path to making $ writing online. I particularly love point #4.

⚡Ladders of Wealth Creation by Nathan Barry
"Making money is a skill—like playing the drums or piano—that you can get better at over time." Nathan is the CEO of ConvertKit. He wrote this post in 2019 and I'm just coming across it now and wish I had sooner. It's a longer read, but an interesting progression from trading your hours for bucks to the ultimate passive income in selling software and digital products.
⚡ GoLinks — I heard Shaan Puri mention GoLinks on the MFM pod last week and got sucked in. I love text expander tools and use AutoHotKey on the regular, so GoLinks was an easy sell—especially with a freemium option!
⚡ How To Newsletter by Ann Handley
Ann cranks out this helpful and entertaining guide for YOU to steal detailing how she grew her newsletter 2,000% in 3 years—but as she writes: "List size is a byproduct, not a goal."
She breaks this guide down in two parts:
1) How I Grew an Engaged Newsletter List (what worked, what didn't)
2) How I Write This Beloved Newsletter (hour by hour)

In last week's edition, I wrote: "I hope you stick around for next week's edition where I'm going to propose how you can reverse engineer a newsletter for success."
I lied. Kind of... I've drafted that piece.
But it wasn't where I wanted it to be for this edition. It's also too long for this newsletter, so I think I'll be posting it on Medium—and will certainly share it here when it's ready for those curious ;)
