…things from Micronesia 

• The United Nations is going to review Japan’s plan to dump 1 million tons of nuclear waste into the Pacific Ocean, a move that the leader of FSM has opposed. Many in the Pacific are against the idea.

• The first meeting of the Coconut National Export Strategy (CocoNES) Advisory Body took place this past week. Members from Chuuk, Kosrae, Yap, and Pohnpei met in person and virtually for the initial meeting, according to Vital Energy Micronesia. Last year, FSM launched CocoNES which will establish the framework for FSM’s strategy to export coconut products. 

  It’s one meeting but the prospect is exciting. I’m hoping this takes off! 

• It’s election season in Guam. Two days after former Gov. Felix Camacho announced he would run again, the race is already starting to heat up. I’ve got my popcorn ready.

Increases in gas prices 

• Regular grade fuel went up to $5.39 a gallon on Feb. 15 on Guam, and wallets everywhere audibly gasped, per the Guam Daily Post.

• In nearby Palau, the price went up to $5.73 for a gallon of regular-grade fuel on Feb. 17, according to Tia Belau.

In other separate but related news…

Vital FSM Petroleum Corporation released a statement early in February which showed that there would scheduled price changes in coming months. (I wish gas companies on Guam did this. From a consumer point of view, it just feels like gas companies operate in the dark. They do what they want and we all get to be blindsided every few weeks) 

Vital noted that global oil prices continue to increase and for FSM customers wholesale fuel prices were confirmed to rise 15 cent a gallon on Feb. 21.

Wholesale prices will go up for FSM customers again on March 21 by another 15 cents.

And then on April 20, there’ll be another expected 10-cent increase in wholesale prices for FSM customers.
