The follower funnel (In case you missed it)

Hey everyone!

Some news: My Twitter account just hit 25k followers! 

What started as a place to share my thoughts has since become an incredible platform that has helped me meet amazing people and launch my own business.

My only regret? Not starting sooner!

But despite getting to 25k followers, my Instagram account is growing even faster right now 😅 

How? I don't know, but I'll do some research and get back to you!

Let's move on to today's issue!

The most common question I get on my DMs is “How do I get more followers?”

There is no simple answer to this question. There are a lot of factors involved in following someone.

My first impulse is to look at the profile of the person asking.

90% of the time, what I see is not good.

I am not drawn to follow the profile. It does not grab my attention.

And that's because their follower funnel is broken. Chances are that yours is too.

So let's fix that!

The first thing you should do is start treating your profile as a brand.

Because it is.

A quick way to visualize its importance is to compare it with a business card:

Business cards are given to people you want to connect or do business with.

Think of social media profiles as modern-day business cards.

This is how people decide whether to follow you or not (not just on Twitter, but also on other social media platforms) 👇

A profile is like a funnel. With each step, you build trust with the person you're interacting with. 

By the time they've gone through it all, they'll decide whether to follow you or not.

Let's see how we can make each step of this funnel more efficient.

My clients often ask me if they should build their brand account instead of their personal account. The answer is always the same:

People trust people.

We prefer to interact with humans rather than brands.

And what's the one thing that every human being has?

A face. 

And back pain (or that's only me?) 😅

The best profile picture is one where we can see your face. If possible, on a background without a lot of "noise".

This may be an uncomfortable point for some people.

Is it necessary to show your face?

Not at all!

Is it advisable?

Yes.

Based on that information, do whatever you feel more comfortable with.

The bio is probably the most influential factor in whether someone becomes a follower.

In writing a bio, it is easy to make the mistake to make it about you, and only you.

“But it’s my bio! What should I add if it’s not about me?”

The whole point of this is to convince people to follow you.

Our nature is selfish. Whenever we read a bio, we don't think, "Oh, how interesting is this person".

We think “Ok, what’s in it for me if I follow you?”.

You need to describe in under 3 seconds what that "What's in it for me" is.

Here are a few examples:

I picked up two Alex's as an example by pure chance, not because it's the best name on the planet 🤷‍♂️

To help you get started, here's a template:

I [what you do] [who you do it for, your target audience] / [Something that adds social proof or a transformative promise you're making] / [Call to Action: Follow, DM, contact...or what you are working on]

Imagine yourself checking the tweets of someone you don't know. 

What would you do after checking the bio?

Exactly. Scroll down to see more. 

And what do you usually find?

The pinned tweet.

The pinned tweet is the one that every potential follower is guaranteed to see. It should be a good one!

I often advise making it either:

• A presentation tweet or thread, with a bit of your story
• A tweet or thread with a high amount of likes and RTs (if possible)

Either of those makes for a good pinned tweet. And it’s one more argument to convince that person to follow you.

My own, for example, is a mix of both:

These other elements are not so important on the funnel, but are still relevant and worth taking into account.

Link in bio
You should link to something that will bring even more value to the people reading your bio. 

One option is to use one of these bio links (which, by the way, are free).

Header

It’s not as relevant as the profile picture but can be a nice addition.

Some people use it to promote what they are doing, others to prompt others to follow, and others to simply share a picture of their pet.

Your @

Does it matter that much? No. 

But it’s better if you can secure an @ that doesn’t have _ or umbers, and that it’s easy to remember
