Tips you can use to build an audience on Reddit

Write content that scratches your own itch
If you solve a problem that you have yourself, it's likely that you'll find people on Reddit looking for a solution to the same problem. You will already have an idea on how your audience looks, and how to connect.

Post in the right communities
Here are things that you want to look for in subreddits:

• Some level of moderation, but not too high. If there's no moderation, it often ends up being a link dump. Too much moderation, and you likely won't be allowed to post your links.
• Link-sharing allowed.
• Highly relevant to your topic.
• Large communities. Ideally you will find some communities with at least a few tens of thousands of members.
   

Self-promotion
Redditors are usually a bit bitter against people who just self-promote. You don't want to become the person who always posts self-promotion. Find a good cadence so that people are still happy reading your stuff without getting annoyed by it. Make sure to add non-self-promotion content in between.

Find out what content works
I always make sure to provide valuable content, then plug a link to my site at the end of the post. That would usually bring me ~100 subscribers per post.

Find out what works in your specific subreddit by studying posts that got tons of upvotes in the past. Go to the Top Posts section and filter for last week, month, or year. 

Find the right time
Reddit is very US-centered. What worked for me as a European was to post in the afternoon (CET time). There are tools that show you what times are best for each subreddit.

Get to Hot Posts quickly
When you post on Reddit, your post ends up in New Posts, where basically nobody sees you. You want to get to Hot Posts, for a chance at the front page. The way that you do this is by getting upvotes rapidly, but don't cheat! Reddit has processes in place to notice when you create multiple accounts and upvote your own content. 

Once your post is on the front page of that subreddit, you've done your job. Anything can happen at that point: An explosion in traffic, medium traffic, or nothing at all. This isn't up to you anymore. Stick with this, be consistent, and you will see the results. Also, make sure to stick around in the comments to engage with the people commenting on your post.
