A MOAT offers protection against those who might want to take your ideas

If you ever saw a movie where kings used to dig moats around their castle walls & gatehouses to allow protection against intruders, this is called a MOAT

Believe it or not, this applies to your brand

If you have a great idea or a great product, people are going to copy it

Moats does two things for you:

1: Moats will act as your barrier to entry

2: Provide you with a line of defense against competitors

Following are the 4 ways you can create MOATS around:

1. Unique experience points and features

2. Ideology

3. Branding

4. Ideology and quality

1/ Unique experience points/features

You can create moats inside your brand by using unique & features and experience points

This creates a barrier of entry so no one can easily copy you

A Moat has to be completely unique

EXAMPLE: Utopia

Another key element that can be used as a moat is your IDEOLOGY

More specifically your ‘Altruism’

Altruism in simple terms is you doing a good deed when someone purchases from you

You can use altruism as a barrier of entry

EXAMPLE: Bombas

Bombas sells socks & each time they sell a pair, they donate a pair

So now people are inclined to purchase from you because their purchase is helping someone & it's for a moral cause

In this way, Bombas has a track record of helping millions of people & as a plus this acts as a very strong moat for them

3/ Branding

You can also rely on BRANDING as part of your moats

Include a unique value as part of your branding & promote it

EXAMPLE: Muddybites

Muddybites sells bite sized ice cream cones Its branding is extremely powerful

Their target consumers are adults and children who enjoy the last bite of their ice cream - it’s a surprise

So they have a melting, playful personality that just melts inside of the individual's mouth

How does this help out?

It immediately aligns with their target persona

Branding is important because it allows you to target the perfect target persona for your audience

Because you are speaking directly to them

They also get to trust you faster It is a moat because,

A: You know your audience

B: You know exactly how to speak to them

C: You know exactly what to present to them

This will help you be ahead of your competitors

4/ Quality

Another feature that you can have as a moat is the quality of your product.

If everyone in the market is using Printify or Printful to source their clothing, everyone has the same quality

If you source from a very high-end manufacturer, it provides you with a barrier of entry

How?

By providing you with USPs like

1. Perfect fit

2. Water-resistant

3. Stretchable material

All of these points create a valuable & unique image in the mind of customers

You can also use experience points & personality traits that only your brand has so when the people engage with you,

It makes their experience memorable

An example of this is above i.e Muddybites

So, in the end, creating moats is the only way you can protect yourself from competitors.

If you have a winning brand & ppf, people will copy you.

It's inevitable, you have to create moats as soon as possible.
