It was recently announced that TikTok ad revenues are more than Twitter and SNAP combined… What’s even more remarkable is that by 2024 TikTok’s ad revenue will top YouTube’s.

That’s pretty incredible considering TikTok didn’t even have an ads platform until 2019.

So what does this mean for marketers and brands? Clearly there’s something working here. Let’s take a look at a few tips to run successful campaigns on the platform.

Use Spark Ads — Spark Ads are like boosted posts on Facebook/Instagram only way better.

A Spark Ad is a way to put ad spend behind your brands own organic posts. The best way to approach this is to promote posts that are giving off good organic engagement signals (views, video completion rate, likes/comments) This way, you can leverage the success of the post to generate even MORE engagement…

Additionally, users are able to interact with the post in the same way as they would if they viewed it organically.

According to TikTok “Spark Ads have a 30% higher completion rate and 142% higher engagement rate than standard In-Feed Ads. They also enjoy a 43% higher conversion rate and 4.2% lower CPM than standard In-Feed Ads.”

Leverage User-Generated-Content (UCG).

UGC is different than paying a creator for a mention, sponsorship, or shoutout on their profile. Instead, you’re finding creators to make videos for you and posting directly on your brand profile. This has a couple of benefits:

• It allows you to generate content for your brand at scale. One of the biggest barriers to entry on TikTok is simply making the content. Finding creators to make videos for you is a great way to supplement your organic strategy and then run Spark Ads on ones that hit.
• UGC can make your content more relatable. The best TikTok accounts have a relatable character. If there’s no one in the company willing to put their face in video content, then UGC might be the path to take until you can hire a FT creator to take over.

Target Your Ads Effectively

• Pick one primary interest category and select 3-5 main “sub interests” from there.
  • This could look like “Technology: Consumer Electronics, Computers, Tablets”
• Leverage hashtags to refine targeting.
  • Make sure the audience available for these hashtags is sufficiently large. You don’t want to limit the reach by selecting something like #bestcomputersforgaming. Instead just use #computers. Let the algorithm help do the refining for you.
• Use lookalike conversion based lists
  • This is similar to the LAL we all know and love on Facebook/Instagram. The reason these work so well is that the source list has already performed the action we want others to take.
  • TikTok recommends the source have 10,000 or more in the list in order to be effective.
