📂 Avoid these startup marketing mistakes

Today's newsletter is proudly supported by 42/Agency 🙌

When you're in scale-up mode and you have KPIs to hit... the pressure is on to deliver demos and signups. And it's a lot to handle: multi-channel strategy, remarketing, landing pages, email sequences, revenue ops, conversion rate optimization.

42/Agency, founded by my friend Kamil Rextin, has worked with companies like Sprout Social, Klue, Qwilr, Uptick, Onfleet, and many more to help them with all things demand generation. They're always my top agency recommendation for specializing in SaaS demand gen. Go read some spicy takes on freemium, "inbound marketing", and category creation and then schedule a free consultation.

Check out these responses:

Don't copy your competitors' strategy - they might be wrong or their strategy might not work for yours.
Trying to appeal to everyone in their positioning. More helpful to niche down, especially in the early days.
"Just write some blog posts!" = ??? = profit
Trying to replicate a large tech company. Be small, no you're small, use that to your advantage. Know your customers inside and out, and everything you create is for them, not investors.
Prioritizing an insane number of growth channels, lack of success metrics to track against before rolling out a channel, stopping things that aren’t working, and automatically jumping on a channel because of a competitor.

The truth is that there are thousands of mistakes to avoid.

But these in particular stand out to me as the most common themes:

  • Copying competitors
  • Not niching down
  • Random content
  • Copying big companies with 100x budget
  • Spreading yourself thin across too many channels

What's your experience been?
