[Crew Review] Amazon sellers may soon access marketplace data

Metamorphosis

In an attempt to pacify EU antitrust regulators and to avoid fines, Amazon offered to boost the visibility of its competitors’ products and share marketplace data with sellers. For good measure, it also proposed to disallow data from retail to be accessed by its commercial arm.

Will this finally protect sellers?

Amazon Top Movers

These are the 10 top terms that have jumped the ranks on Amazon from May 29th to June 11th. Some of these terms might pique your interest, so let’s get to know why they’re trending on Amazon!

The keyword “hair blinger” and “blinger” are among this week’s top 10, taking our #4 and #7 slots. The last beauty trend is a hair tool, which scatters crystals throughout your hair, and is going viral on TikTok.

Also, the amount sold of this product has doubled in just a few days, going from selling only 18 units to 1,759 units.

Insta’s Algorithm Change

If you’re a social media manager, you probably turn to reposts every once in a while to fill up your content calendar. There’s generally nothing wrong with it. In fact, a lot of accounts and channels are dedicated to reposts (think TikTok compilations on Youtube).

This might seem unfair to the creators who don’t get enough credit for their original content. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, certainly thinks so. According to him, “If you create something from scratch, you should get more credit than if you're re-sharing something you found from someone else.”

This is why Instagram is changing its algorithm to put more emphasis on original content. It doesn’t necessarily need to be directly from Instagram to consider it original. What matters is if you made it from scratch, it’s supposed to be ranked higher compared to a repost.

Mosseri emphasized that this is not new, as the app already prioritizes original content. However, they want to refine the algorithm more to have this effect.

We’re expecting other social media platforms to follow suit, so you better come up with more original ideas for posts.

Amazon Takes Flight Again

Shortly after Walmart announced its plans of expanding its drone deliveries to six states, Amazon provided a long-overdue update on its aerial delivery endeavors.

The Everything Store is going to give Prime Air another shot and has chosen Lockeford, California as its test community. Residents can order from Amazon and receive packages that can be as heavy as 5 pounds.

The retail giant reports that it has created more than two dozens of drone prototypes. It has had several failed attempts before, but this time, it’s optimistic that Prime Air is safe enough to be greenlit by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The drones use the so-called sense-and-avoid system which allows it to be safe both when in transit and when approaching the ground. When deliveries in Lockeford become successful, Prime Air will be rolled out in more states.

More Vendors on Walmart

Last year, Walmart announced that it will start accepting non-US vendors in its platform. This time around, it’s reaching out to some UK-based sellers to join the US marketplace.

Sellers who are invited to the program will avail all of Walmart’s features, including WFS. They will also reportedly get a dedicated boarding team along with all seller tools available to US vendors.

Walmart seems to be ramping up its vendor numbers. Earlier this year, it also invited Indian sellers to offer more products on its site, which has up to 100 million unique visitors every month. The brick-and-mortar king seems to be taking notes from Amazon’s flywheel model by bringing in more sellers to provide a wide array of product options.

Walmart isn’t Amazon (or at least, not yet). However, it’s heading in the right direction and has successfully strengthened its online arm. If you’re an Amazon seller who’s curious about selling on Walmart, check out our comprehensive Amazon vs. Walmart article.

The Jungle Scout for Walmart Sellers

Speaking of selling on Walmart, a company called Wally Smarter has recently released a Walmart-vendor-specific tool that has features similar to Jungle Scout and Helium 10.

According to its website, Wally Smarter offers nine different tools, including the following:

  • A 150-million product ID database to estimate sales and make product research easier
  • A 20-million Walmart Keyword database to find high-volume, low-competition keywords
  • Ability to find what keywords your competitor is ranking for
  • A niche finder

There’s a 7-day free trial, and you can choose from a Basic Plan (starts at $21/month) and a Professional Plan (starts at $33/month).

Sell + Scale Summit

No vacation plans for September?

You’re invited to Helium 10’s Sell + Scale Summit on September 19 to 22 at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas. The event is focused on building a strong private-label brand, with over 30 e-commerce topics covered by industry leaders, including Gary Vaynerchuk, who is the event’s keynote speaker.

EcomCrew’s very own Mike Jackness will also be speaking, so don’t forget to say hi.
