Dave Isay speaking at the Virginia Museum of History

“What StoryCorps reminds us of is the beauty, the poetry, the power, and the grace in the stories of everyday people when we just take the time to listen.”

StoryCorps’ legendary founder Dave Isay believes that the soul is contained in the human voice. In his talk for CreativeMornings/Richmond, Isay tells the origin of StoryCorps, where individuals invite a loved one to sit in a recording booth and share their story. In the sacred space of the booth, stories and wisdom pass between the teller and listener that would have otherwise gone unshared, an act of generosity and love.

Today, the StoryCorps archive stands at 650,000 stories — the biggest collection of human voices ever recorded. In his closing salvo, Isay challenges us to share stories with strangers across the political divide and get to know them as human beings. Listen to Dave Isay’s manifesto and marvel at how beautiful it is to listen to one another.
