John Bolton says he ‘helped plan coups d’etat’ in other countries.

Speaking to CNN, [John Bolton, a former national security adviser to Donald Trump] said it was wrong to describe Trump’s attempt to stay in power after the 2020 election as a coup. "It’s rambling from one half-vast idea to another plan that falls through and another comes up.”
    ...
His host, Jake Tapper, said: “One doesn’t have to be brilliant to attempt a coup.” Bolton said: “I disagree with that, as somebody who has helped plan coups d’etat, not here, but you know, other places." Tapper asked: “Successful coups?” Bolton said: “Well, I wrote about Venezuela in [a 2020 memoir] and it turned out not to be successful."
    ...
[In 2019, Bolton said]: "Just as it’s not a coup when the president of the U.S. gives an order to the Department of Defense, it’s not a coup for Juan Guaidó to try and take command of the Venezuelan military." [Journalist Jonathan M Katz] said: “The United States has indeed sponsored and participated in lots of coups [and] Bolton was personally involved in many of the recent efforts – in Nicaragua, Iraq, Haiti and others.”

Should assault weapons be banned?

660 votes, 105 comments

Context: Newly-confirmed ATF head criticized for calls to ban "assault weapons."

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - My reasoning is in the name - assault weapon. The only purpose of these guns is to kill other humans. There are plenty of firearms available to be used for protection or sport. Assault weapons aren’t necessary for either purpose.

No - If you look up the definition of an assault weapon it has to have a selective rate of fire meaning it can operate in a semi automatic (1 trigger pull fires only 1 bullet) mode and a fully automatic (machine gun) mode. The Armalite (AR)-15 is not an assault weapon even though it looks like one...

Yes - BUT, the term assault weapon needs to be defined. [...] Is it a center-fired weapon, does it ha...
