[Crew Review] How effective were your Prime Day deals?

Reevaluate

Amazon’s (first) 2022 Prime Day is officially over. You may have offered big discounts to help with brand awareness. But how effective are these deals anyway?

Turns out, while millions of customers visit the site on Prime Day, it’s not when they tend to throw money around. To help you understand your target audience better, we asked Amazon customers when they spend the most on online purchases.

Here’s when you should really ramp up the discounts.

Amazon Top Terms

We did the math and pulled out the top 10 terms that rose in popularity between June 29 and July 9. Check out the keywords that are making numbers on Amazon!

It's fair to say that TikTok managed to make some major headlines these past years. The trendy platform for all things continues to reign supreme, especially when it comes to influencers and famous people. Some actors have revealed that what they really smoke in films and TV shows are herbal cigarettes.

That’s why “Honeyrose herbal cigarettes” is taking our spot #1 and is viral on Amazon. Some of these products have already seen a drastic increase in their sales, selling 14 units per day to 138 units per day in the past few days.

Degrees of Liability

It’s an age-old problem: who do you go after when products you purchased from Amazon malfunction and cause damage?

It’s easier to sue the e-commerce giant because it’s where customers get the items, not to mention it’s based in the United States. On the other hand, the malfunctioning products were not really made by Amazon. Most of the time, the third-party sellers are on the other side of the world, far from the clutches of US law.

In cases like this, courts have to answer the same question: Is Amazon considered a seller under the product liability statute or is it simply a marketplace?

Here’s what a New Jersey District Court had to say.

Biden Bides His Time

President Biden is planning to ultimately make changes to Trump’s China tariffs. However, with such an important and sensitive topic, he’s taking his time before making a decision.

Biden may rollback some of the tariffs affected, particularly on consumer goods. But before he makes any official announcements, he has to figure out the optimal move that will put enough pressure on China without causing more economic damage by rising inflation. Biden also has to consider labor unions that have sent hundreds of requests to the office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to keep the tariffs.

President Biden said his administration will have more discussions about the next move, but this hesitation might later translate to tariff reductions on just a small amount of Chinese products affected by Trump’s America First economic policy.

Prime Perks and Premium

When Amazon Prime was launched in 2005, members had to pay $79 to get guaranteed two-day deliveries for a whole year. This amount increased to $99 in 2014 and to $119 in 2021.

Earlier this year, the Everything Store announced a $20 and $2 increase on the annual and monthly memberships, respectively. The new rates became effective on February 18 for new sign-ups and on March 25 for old members. As a result, there’s been a noticeable stall in the growth of Prime membership in the US in 2022. Amazon cited the increase of Prime benefits as well as the rise in transportation costs and wages (the minimum wage went up to $18 from $15).

Among the most recent Prime benefits added is the one-year free Grubhub+ subscription, which automatically renews to $9.99 per month after the first year. In exchange for this Premium perk, Amazon will have the option to purchase between 2 and 5 percent stake in the company, depending on how many users Amazon drives to Grubhub.

Whether or not this move convinces more Prime members to retain their membership is yet to be seen. However, if the stagnation continues (or worse, membership declines), this may affect sellers in the long run because Prime members are more likely to buy from Amazon, and they have higher conversion rates compared to non-Prime members.

Walmart’s Expanded Delivery Service

While Amazon is scaling back on its delivery network expansion, Walmart is going in the opposite direction.

In a recently concluded agreement, Walmart will purchase 4,500 units of Canoo’s Lifestyle Delivery Vehicle (LDV) for its last mile deliveries. The LDV is also electric, contributing to Walmart’s goal of achieving zero-emissions by 2040. They are expected to hit the road sometime in 2023.

Under their agreement, Canoo is not allowed to do business with Amazon or its subsidiaries and affiliates. So Walmart is upping its delivery game while making sure its no. 1 competitor doesn’t get into the mix.
