Laila Binbrek

“Nuance is subtle. If you sit still and listen, you will hear it.”

Laila Binbrek is the Coordinating Director of the United Arab Emirates National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia), the oldest international platform for art and architecture. As a Canadian of Yemeni heritage and with family roots in Zanzibar, Binbrek sees art and culture as a vehicle to create dialogue and understanding. By selecting artists who are not Emirati but who live and practice in the UAE, she expands the notion of who is allowed to represent their nation. By hiring Emirati caretakers of the Pavilion, she empowers a team of cultural ambassadors who can dispel stereotypes and combat Islamophobia. Watch Laila Binbrek’s thoughtful talk and consider the nuanced narratives you want to tell.

Abstract digital art with text "critical"

Our upcoming August theme is "Critical," chosen by CreativeMornings/Calgary. What do criticism and discernment mean to you? How do you relate to what's "critical" into your life? Whether it’s a story, image, observation, song, poem, or other artifact, you can share your submissions in this form. We’ll feature a "Critical" round-up in next month’s theme announcement!
