Hannah Chalew

“The role of the artist is to be a mirror, to reflect back to our culture, to help us think critically and inspire action.”

What does it mean to raise children to think fossil fuel companies are a natural part of the landscape? From Louisiana’s receding coast line to the toxic pollution pervading “Cancer Alley,” these issues are omnipresent and yet often invisible in New Orleans. Artist and environmental activist Hannah Chalew makes them central to her work. By reusing industrial waste and byproduct as materials and building installations that people can spend time in, Chalew’s artwork prompts audiences to consider their tangled connections to oil and gas. Watch Chalew’s urgent talk for CreativeMornings/New Orleans and see how art can hold a mirror to the world’s challenges.
