Sallie's Opinion

What if the workplace was designed by women?

We know what a workplace that is centered on men — and men’s needs — looks like. It’s all around us.

It’s 9 to 5. Or maybe 8 to 6. Or even 10 to 9.

It’s in-person, or, sometimes now, on Zoom. It’s where mostly-male CEOs push for return-to-office … complete with soul-destroying commutes, freezing office temperatures, and the unequal distribution of “office housekeeping” among the genders.

It’s where men make more money than women, simply for being men; and it’s where that differential increases when people become parents — with men earning a “daddy bonus” and women paying a “mommy tax.”

How does this type of work environment work for women? Not so well.

Here’s a better way.

This is how I started an editorial I wrote over at Fast Company this week. Read it at the link below.

💸 Money Tip of the Week

Spooky season never dies: Halloween candy is on sale today. 🍬🎃That’s a money tip, right?

Well, here’s a bonus tip just in case: It’s also November … and the inflation we’re experiencing is at unprecedented levels … meaning it’s a good time to start thinking about holiday travel and gift-giving vis-à-vis your budget. Here are some tips on how to start planning. And if you don’t want to start planning from scratch, our Holiday Gift and Budget Tracker is all set up for you (plus, it’s free for members).

Ellevest went to MAKERS 2022

“I’m still riding the high of being around so many talented, passionate, and inspiring women at the 2022 MAKERS Conference, which I attended last week. As a financial advisor, I think every day about financial wellness, but the women who spoke there reminded me that our end goal is a lot bigger. There was so much spectacular advice offered at the event, but here’s one of my favorites, from actress Zuri Adele:

‘Daydream [a] version of yourself … grounded [and] unshaken. How will you connect dots between that confident, centered person and the chaos of the world around you? What cause is most important to you? And who are you talking to, in the community impacted by that cause, who can let you know honestly if the support you envision is actual support? What are you willing to invest and share to make this happen? Time? Talent? Resources? Connections? Where is your place of overflow … that you can pour into that cause?’”
