Putting Our Values On the Ballot

I don’t have to tell you what tomorrow is. You already know.

I’m exhausted by it all, too: the barrage of ads urging us to vote (I will), the influx of emails asking us to vote (I’ve got it), the avalanche of texts exhorting us to vote (Yup, I’m still planning on it, random-B-list-movie-star-who-is-texting-me-to-vote).

There’s a lot of darkness in it all. And a lot of anger. And a lot of messaging about how much is on the line. It’s exhausting.

But it’s also important — because there’s a connection between the choices we’ll make at the ballot box and the economic impact on women and their families.

Once More, With Feeling: Fed Rates Edition

Predicted, but now official: The Fed hiked interest rates yet again last week, putting the target federal funds rate at 3.75%. This is the fourth (!) hike of that size in a row, continuing the most aggressive rate hike campaign since the ’80s.

Now what does that actually mean? The short version: The Fed’s goal is to raise interest rates enough to curb inflation (high rates mean taking out loans is less attractive, and saving money is more attractive, presumably forcing companies to drop prices), but not enough to trigger a recession (people pull back on spending and save too much, and the economy tanks). And thus far, these hikes haven’t been enough to curb inflation. But Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that persistent inflation poses a bigger threat to the economy than a recession.
