Sallie's Opinion

Hate to Burst That Overconfident Bubble, But …

You remember overconfidence, right? Confidence’s flashy cousin?

Confidence is compelling. Research has shown that overconfidence is also compelling.

That means that even if someone has proven that their confidence in themselves is misplaced, we still find their confidence to be so enticing that we believe in them anyway. (See: Adam Neumann losing WeWork $40 billion in valuation — and getting seriously paid out anyway. Then getting another $350 million check for his new business idea … a PowerPoint about branded real estate.)

Last week was notable: (What felt like) a decade of news happened in just five days. It was also the week in which the overconfidence bubble seemed to burst.

Let’s start with the tech wunderkinds.

Good(ish) news on the inflation front

Inflation was slightly lower in October than the 7.9% analysts expected. But we’re still in “decades-long high” territory. Confused? Read our explainer to sort out what it all means.

How to navigate the holiday gift-giving conversations

“Sooo, how are we doing gifts this year?” We know it can feel awkward to be the person to bring it up — let alone make the case for less, if your wallet is hurting — so we’ve got some tips to help smooth out the chat, no matter who you have it with.

Money Tip of the Week

Today — November 15 — is the final day to claim your Child Tax Credit (or Earned Income Tax Credit)! If you have kids (or meet the income requirements for 2021), it’s worth checking to see if you’re eligible — the CTC can be up to $3,600 per child, depending on age and your financial situation. That’s money back in your pocket.

Money stories we’re monitoring this week

A critical story that got lost last week: The student debt relief program is now on hold, thanks to a federal judge in Texas who ruled it unconstitutional. It’s definitely not the end, but applications are paused for the moment.

Meanwhile, if you haven’t been following the slow-motion car crash that is Elon Musk’s Twitter … good for you, honestly. But now, it looks like it’s seeping out into the markets — in particular, the valuation of pharmaceutical stocks.

ICYMI: Ellevest CEO Sallie Krawcheck met up with Cheddar’s Hena Doba for one of their signature Walk and Talks to chat through her best financial advice right now (and always tbh).

If you read our inflation explainer above and want to dive even deeper, we liked this one about how economists think about and track inflation.

Money? Actually buying happiness? Groundbreaking.
