Why did a federal judge overturn the government's pandemic-era border policy?

Source: Texas Tribune

  1. Summary
Title 42 is a decades-old public health law that was implemented by President Trump during the start of the Covid-19 pandemic to quickly expel migrants from the border. Migrant expulsions under Title 42 bypass the steps in traditional expulsions, such as deportation hearings.

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan said that the public health justification for Title 42 expulsions was weak, as millions have crossed the border since the use of Title 42 began in 2020. He agreed to the Biden administration's request for a five-week hold on the court's order with "great reluctance." Administration officials requested the time to prepare for a potentially large surge in illegal migration from the policy's end.

The Biden administration has also relied on Title 42 powers at the border, but earlier this year attempted to end the policy. Republican states sued to preserve the policy, and a federal judge agreed with the states in May. Tuesday's ruling renders the May ruling moot, as Judge Sullivan rejected the original basis for the expulsions.

Should states require health insurers to cover fertility treatments?

306 votes, 30 comments

Context: Report finds sperm counts declining globally, which could potentially cause infertility problems.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - As much as I feel empathy towards those who do have fertility problems I don't feel that fertility treatment is in any way basic healthcare (which are the only things that should be mandated). [...] Fertility treatments are a premium service and one that not everyone is likely to need. As such it isn't fair to distribute such costs onto everyone else, basic insurance should be inexpensive (way less expensive than it is now) and provide impeccable coverage for basic healthcare needs (way better than it does now) with little to no out-of-pocket for the patient, but it should only have to cover the things that everyone is likely to need.
